Faster Dialup Service?
« on: December 07, 2003, 06:04:01 PM »
My ISP has lowered its prices.  Now for basic dialup service, instead of $20 a month, it is lowering to $15 a month.  In addition, they are offering an enhanced dialup package for $20 a month.  They claim the enhanced version is up to 5x faster than the basic service.  What makes this possible is software called Propel Accelerator.  Has anyone heard of Propel Accelerator.  Is this something anyone can purchase and download without paying an ISP more money a month to use?  Also in the enhanced package, my ISP is offering an additional e-mail address and Pop-Up Stopper.

Give me some info folks.   smile.gif

Well, I posted the above before doing my own searching.  Take a look at this.  http://www.propel.com/ac/cost.jsp

Turns out to use the propel software on your own a monthy fee would have to be paid.  Looks like by getting it through my ISP it would be a couple of dollars cheaper per month to use.

Anyone ever try this Propel Accelerator?

Here is a CNET review:  http://reviews.cnet.com/4505-3514_7-203055...tml?legacy=cnet

Do a Google search and you will find even more info...

I haven't used it myself since I have cable, which Charter just upped to 2mbps as a free trial.  A 1.6MB file downloaded in under 5 seconds.

I think Earthlink has a similar product or must use this.  Cause they advertise the same 5x faster than regular dial up too.

Oh, yup, Earthlink uses this too, as I just followed your link to the Prpel web site.

I'm glad you provided the link to the propel page, it has confirmed what I always thought, it will NOT spped up you connection to the web. That is physically impossible. Their used to be a piece of software from Connectix that does EXACTLY what this so called accelerator does. It caches web pages in a more efficient manner, so that on you next visit to the site, it will use this better cache to load faster.

This will NOT improve download speed.

This will NOT improve connection speed.

This will NOT improve first time visits to web pages.

This WILL require you to reload pages multiple times, because the software will always want to pull the site from cache.

I say, take your extra $5 per month, and save for a G5 smile.gif

tongue.gif I have dail up here in Henryetta, Oklahoma and get a fast connection to my ISP in Tulsa which is 50 miles away. My town has a fiber optic setup for phone service, the only thing slowing down the connection is the land lines outside of town. We have the fiber converter out side my home with the phone line coming up from underground. The DSL setup is local at the switching station which is 4 blocks from my house. I am thinking about getting DSL this coming summer next year after I finish putting the new cat 5 phone lines inside the house.

You probably already know this, and just made a typing mistake, but I feel obligated to let you know just in case smile.gif

Cat 5 cables are not phone lines, but rather ethernet cables. Try to plug one of those babies into your phone jakc, and you may need a hammer to get it in wink.gif

I use cat 5 to connect ethernet to my dsl modem and then phone clips from modem to phone line, which I believe is standard. smile.gif

I would like to have DSL but for what I use the internet for it wouldn't make sense.  Also, it would cost me $40 a month! jawdrop.gif

Personally, I think broadband makes sense for ANYONE who uses the web. The experience is so much better, it's unreal. If you are already using Dialup with a second phone line, it is normally the same cost to go to broadband and canceling the second line.

tongue.gif yes they have cat 5 phone lines, I have a couple of rolls of it that I am installing in my house. do a google search for these lines there are many places that sell or supply them. You can also get them from the phone company if you know who to ask. We use SBC down here, the workers are more friendly.
