Comcast Speed

Anyone using Comcast, will be getting double the speed. Below is the list of the dates for the bump.

I was waiting for a notice from Comcast, but haven't received anything yet. My speed was running between 1300 and 1600kbps.

Today I disconnected the power and cable from the modem for a couple minutes, plugged it back in and had the increase. Now I'm getting;

Good info Bob, thanks. I live in the Wash DC suburbs, in the Rockville MD area. My speeds have increased some of late, and I now generally cruise at about 2.2 - 2.4 Mbps. When/if Comcast will continue to speed things up (as part of a local switch over?), I dunno. But for sure, I'll keep checking.

FWIW, my first connect to the internet (Arpanet as it was called then) was via a 300 baud acoustic coupler.

Your speed should have been bumped up where you live. Disconnect the modem for a couple minutes and check.

My first connection, if I remember right, was 1200 baud.

I did as you suggested Bob and got the results as indicated. Perhaps with all the snow, the electrons just got cold and sluggish.

Well, at least they've done something for the outrageous price increases they've foisted on us! When I signed up 3 years ago, I believe that the internet portion of my service was $29/mo. It is now $42.95, soon to be hiked another 9%! This is highway robbery, pure and simple, and the unfortunate result of a monopoly situation.

In the past year alone, my cable package has gone from $87/mo to $101. And that doesn't include ANY premium movie channels - it's the digital cable, and broadband internet. Because I also have digital phone service from them, I get a $16.90 discount on that service, but it too has crept up to over $20 since I signed up. What I started out paying a total of $99 for three years ago for all three services, is about to start costing me $131. Gee, I wish we'd all gotten 30% raises over the last three years!

What is even more annoying is that cable prices in MA are far from uniform - and North Andover pays the MOST of any of the surrounding communities. We aren't the wealthiest community in the immediate area (Andover takes that spot), but we pay the most for cable service by far.

End of rant...

Trouble is, once you're hooked...there's no going back to dial-up! (And the broadband providers sure know that!)

I'm not on Comcast but I did get a letter from Charter stating that due to some outages in the past month or two speeds have been increased to 2mbps as a show of customer support. Perhaps that's what's going on with Comcast as well.

I am also with Charter, and while I have noticed the speed improvement when downloading files (a 1.6MB file took approximately five seconds) I doubt that I will pay extra once the free trial period ends in March.  The way Charter structures its packages I will have to fork over an additional $20 per month just for faster broadband service.

Websites may load a tad faster (if their server can handle it...) but it isn't enough of a difference for me.

In nearby Ashland, Oregon, Charter's prices are significantly less because Ashland has a publicly-owned fiber optic Internet service.  And why are Charter's prices less in Ashland, you ask?

Because Charter has COMPETITION.  What a concept!
