...I would like to hook up our camcorder via the RCAs to our 8500, download the video and save it on our machine where we could put it on our website for the family in mpeg format.

I am also looking for some type of audio app that you can drop vocals out of recorded tracks (if it is at all possible).

Running on 9.1 with 300+MB.

Yeah, I've done that.

Simple really.

Just use the Apple Video Player!

You'll need QuickTime Pro to change the compression, resolution etc.

Once launched, you can call up a menu from the tool bar, or type command 4.

The controls are pretty self evident about recording.

For sound, you can export out of iTunes, QuickTime Pro, or if you want to playaround - SonicWorx - a FREE "Demo", really! Just go to their site at:
http://www.prosoniq.com/

There's a few German words stuck in the English version, but it's easy to figure out. They also have a PDF manual.

Works in OS 9 only.

I recomend getting David Pogue's "iMove the Missing Manual" for help.

Or see if your local library has a copy (mine did to my surprise!).

I also think you can "record" your video in ther Apple video player at different resolutions (which could save you a step).

I think it records at the resolution/size you have the viewing window setup.

I figure you have the VRAM maxed out (8MB), as you'll need it to run the software.

I got the video to work fine (I bought an a/v cord with single audio outputs, not thinking), but I can't seem to get any audio in the app.

Is that "normal"?

I captured about a minute and a half at full compression and the file ended up being a 356MB file.

Guess I may need a burner.

By the way, know of a good converter to convert from that SimpleText movie to an mpeg? (preferably freeware - I'm broke).

I don't know a lot about doing it the way you are doing it. I have been importing VHS tapes into my imac via my Canon mini DV camcorder. I bring them into imovie as a DV stream and then burn DVD's with iDVD. When I do this, every hour of video takes up 13GB of HD space. So, yeah you need a lot of free disk space.

I would think that Quicktime pro could do that conversion for you. It's not free ($29 i think) but it is probably the best deal that any software company will ever give you.

What is kind of funny, is that you already have the pro software installed with the basic free Quicktime installation. You just need the registration code to unlock the pro capabilities.
