Recommendations for a USB hub?
« on: December 15, 2003, 10:54:51 PM »
Well, I finally did it!

After almost six years with my workhorse beige G3 and many upgrades, I have made the jump to more more modern hardware:

I got an incredible deal on a barely used G4 dual 800 w/ 1.25 GB RAM, and after connecting my Epson SC740, Kensington Expert Mouse (trackball), and Griffin iMic (for audio input), I've used-up all the USB ports.

I've read that all hubs are not equal, and I'd like to hear from y'all which brands / models are working well for you (or which ones didn't), ideally on similar hardware / software (I'm running X.2.8 on this box).

TIA,

 - kbeartx

I'm happy with my Keyspan - USB Hub.

It's powered
It's compatible
It's inexpensive! $29 US directly from Keyspan.

Using Belkin 7 port hub on G4 733 and G5 1.8. Had one go bad, covered under warranty- that was a long time ago.  No problems since.

Assante FriendlyNet 4 port hub here - also powered. I think that's the key usually - it's usually a non-powered hub that causes the problem.

Here's an idea though - since you're running OS X, why not get a 4 port USB 2.0 card and skip the external hub entirely?

I just got the Adaptec 4 port USB 2.0 card on a great deal from CompUSA. Unfortunately, that rebate is no longer available, but you can still get it from YesMicro, shipping included for $39.95. That will give you 6 USB ports total - the two built-in USB 1.1 ports and 4 new USB 2.0 ports. Considering that a hub will cost at least half that or more with shipping, not a bad deal and a lot less desktop spaghetti.

I've been using a self powered Belkin 4 port USB hub (F5U014) for a while and it has worked flawlessly.

Now Belkin has a newer model, F5U235.

And also has a Mac model (Usually not neccessary to be platform specific for USB hubs).

Belkin powered 4 port hub,(in the perfect shade of grey to match the Cube), thanks to a great TS trade. Runs the Apple mouse, a USB 2 hard drive, an Epson 740 and an ioGear USB 2 "Memory Bank" card reader.

And a 7 port modular Belkin hub (color is not near as important on the iMac) at the house.

The nly complaint is the Logitech scroll mouse has to be unplugged and replugged every so often, but that, I think is the mouse itself, becuase it doesn't seem to matter which port iss used.

Run a Zip drive, an Epson printer, and soon the Zip CR-RW.

Fear those who do not care; they neither kill nor betray, but betrayal and murder exist because of their silent consent.

1 Belkin F5U021 and another older Belkin that I don't know what # it is.

Congratulations on the G4 dual 800 w/ 1.25 GB RAM kbear! Welcome to the new world.
 B) May you use it in good health and long may it run.

I still use my Beige unit along with the G4 933. It makes me appreciate the G4 more.   wink.gif

For nearly four years I've had some 'no-name' generic USB hub which my Apple dealer sold me. Not a moments trouble with this self powered unit...so one never knows, but your chances for reliability increase with the better known brands that fully support Macs.

I got a Griffin USB hub as I happy with the iMic. It's been a little flaky with my K-Mouse and Zip 250- lots of plugging and unplugging. Tech support was nasty.  It replaced a Keyspan (3 yrs old). I'd go with a Keyspan

I've got the same hub. Bought it when I bought the iMac using OS9.04 and still use it with OSX.2.8. The only issue I can ever recall was some sort of problem that involved my scanner being connected when not in use. That only happened with OS9. Since moving to OSX, I forgot about that issue--and didn't realize that I've had my scanner connected all the time for months (nearly a year) without a problem until I read this thread. Other than that, I never even think about the hub. smile.gif

A couple of IMacs, an iPad, a bunch of iPhones...two of which don’t live here, but I still pay for. Oh yeah, wife, daughters, and yes—a grandson!
