Nice. Now have the SuperDrive and a 52x Burner.

I got the Lite On Black 52x32x52 CD-RW Drive, Model LTR-52327S

It's down to $36 Shipped.

Used the new Drivers from xlr8yourmac

Have the Eject menu for both Drives. Or use Option-Eject for the Lite-On.

I put it in the lower MDD Bay as recommended.

Compared to replacing the Power Supply this was pretty easy.

Except....

I dropped a small screw that holds the Burner to the Case.

Took a half hour to find it in the machine.

Other than that it's great.

Kelly, I have that drive in my Sawtooth - it works fine (bootable and all the rest). It has native support for 10.2.3 and beyond - there's no need for the modified driver unless you're using an earlier OS version. Can't remember what OS/version you're using in the MDD though.

I got this drive from Circuit City with a rebate for $19 - it appears fairly regularly at the Big Box stores for this price, if you watch carefully.

Pretty funny when you consider that my first 4X4X8 external FW CD-RW was something like $275. I've bought four CDRW's in the past year (3 for PC's I was refurbing) and never spent more than $19 on any of them after rebates.

Having two internal CD/DVD drives, ah, what a grand idea. I just can't understand why Apple removed this capability from the new G5s. At least they should have made it a BTO option (IMNHO).

Yep, just a regular Imelda Marcos of the CDRW set, Kelly!

- I lucked out (I was about to order from NewEgg when I spotted the ad in the Sunday paper for the LiteOn) and the PC compatible CDRW's are a lot easier to come by, needless to say!

But to return to the original issue - do you not have native iTunes etc. support without the driver from XLR8? The web site said 10.2.3 and up...

Just curious.

Guess I could try it on my other OSX Partition sometime and see.

I left the original stuff there, in case I needed it.

I wonder if I could put one of those in my QuickSilver? I have the Superdrive and another
bay below it but I don't know if I can put another optical drive in there. I think it was originally for a zip or something. It would be nice if I could put one of those in there at the price. It looks like a nice drive.

Gary, it depends on which model you have. The later QS/MDD models have a spare 5.25" external bay - the earlier ones appear to have a 3.5" external bay (for a zip). At least that's what I could determine from everymac.com. Not sure what the internal bits look like, but you should have a look. From one set of installation instructions which I can no longer find, the picture seemed to show a smaller drive tray/housing in the earlier model. Whether it's possible to modify the innards to accommodate two 5.25" drives, I don't know. All the references for two optical drive installations on XLR8YourMac.com are to the MDD's.

I was thinking about doing the same thing, that's a steal price.

I ended up installing a Apple DVD-ROM drive from a G4 AGP in the lower bay of my MDD.

Reason in my case was archiving my family videos. Once completed with iDVD I could make copies for family distribution with Toast. A lot fast and more practical than waiting for iDVD to burn each copy from hard drive. Once the projects are finished, I burn a master DVD-R and erase the project.

I don't think you could add one without a Dremel Tool Gary.

External Firewire Case would do just as well.

Paddy. Just FYI I Booted to my other 10.2.6 partition.

The Drive was recognized but Apple Systerm Profiler said no Burn Support.

I think I'd read that it took 10.2.8 or Panther for support.

Just re-read the XLR8 link and realized that it was the earlier LiteOn models that had support from 10.2.3 onwards. Ours gets native support from 10.2.8 onwards - you are correct. Since I'd already upgraded to Panther, this wasn't an issue for me.

At any rate, it's a great drive and I've been happy with it!

Yes, mine's got a 3.5" bay in there. I think I'd need a dremel, which I have, and a blow torch which I don't have.

External is probably my best bet.
