OT - Lights on, nobody home?
« on: March 08, 2003, 09:42:00 AM »
I read a very funny bit just now in the Boston Globe. From an article about thieves stealing cars left idling while their owners do errands or run back into the house:

quote:
Consider the man who started his car about 8:45 a.m. on Jan. 23 outside his Roslindale home. He went back into the house, made his coffee, grabbed his briefcase, and went back out. By then, his car was gone. Police said the man called 911, and police asked him to come to the station to fill out a stolen car report. So he started hs wife's BMW, went back into the house, got his paperwork in order, and grabbed his coffee. But when he went out again, the BMW was gone too.

"Two cars, 10 minutes. A Guinness record for foolish behavior," Murray said.

For the record - the guy got both cars back and the suspect is 13 years old, is barely tall enough to see over the dashboard and was found with SIX sets of keys from cars stolen while idling!

Years ago. It was 10 below zero. I jumped out of my vehicle to use an ATM.

I locked myself out. The gas gauge was below Empty and it was still running.

After a little bit a cop came along and opened it up.

Lucky me.

Now I always have a spare key in my wallet.

What is that 'old' saying? 'Never trust anyone under 20!'
THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF COUNTRIES
Those that use metric = #1 Measurement system
And the United States = The Banana system
CAUTION! Childhood vaccinations cause adults!

I'll never forget the time when I was returning home in my Mom's car from my after school job only to find my sister's car in the driveway. Mom's car was quite old by then, and nearing the end of its useful life. The handle on the outside of the driver's door was broken, so you had to leave the front wing window unlocked so you could push it in and reach the inside handle to open the door. It's winter, mind you, and there is snow and ice on the street. I leave the car idling in the street to go up to the house to ask if I should park it there, or if my sister should move her car. She comes out as I'm getting close, and gets this wide eyed look. I turn around to see Mom's car rolling backwards down the street. Automatic transmission, but I hadn't gotten it all the way into park. (Old car, like I said.) There's a somewhat newer car parked half a block behind me. I have to run to the moving car, punch in the wing window, pull the inside handle, jump in and get it stopped! Fortunately, I made it on time.
Ya gotta applaud those bunnies for sacrificing their hearing just so some guy in Cupertino can have better TV reception.

What a coincidence...

I was over to my buddy's shop this morning dropping off a printout of a WordPerfect file that he couldn't open on his PC. (I opened it in Quark.)

He told me of another guy in town that stopped at the local quickie mart to run in and get a pack of smokes. He had left his truck running and it was gone when he came back out.

The kicker is...he got a visit from the thief two days later offering to return his vehicle for $200. He paid and got his truck back.

The guy must love his truck.
