I need help....

Beige G3 266 Tower
256MB
120GB Western Digital HD (OS 9.0.4)
2GB Apple drive (OS 8.5)
MacAlly Combo FW/USB card
Que! FireWire CD-RW
Toast Deluxe 4.0

The owner of the machine has a need for 8.5, so before suggestions come in to upgrade,  I wanted to make that clear. smile.gif

As far as 9.0.4 goes, we needed at least 9 to install the USB and FireWire support for the MacAlly card, so that's the reason.

Problem: We are having a FIT with this thing even booting normally after a CLEAN install (the WD drive is a brand-new drive) and the system does not recognize the card in ASP.

The weird thing is that it worked before I did the clean install on the new drive, and so I know that the card is good.

When I go to Toast, we routinely get the "No CD-recorder found" error.

Any ideas? Toast's FW, USB and CD Reader extensions are loaded up as well.
Umm, I'm a nerd.

Could the problem be HFS versus HFS+ FORMAT?

Hi Chris,

I'm not sure what the problem is, but.... even though you stressed the need for 8.5 I feel it necessary to point out that 8.5 is very buggy. The upgrade (free download) to 8.6 fixed many problems and is a VERY Stable OS.  I can't think of anything that requires 8.5 that will not work with 8.6 since they are essentially the same except for the Bug fixes.  I would definately start there no matter what other problems exist.

Chris after reading your post again... Your booting problem brings back memories of using my Sony Spressa CDRW on my old 333 imac with OS 9.xx.  Try booting with the firewire drive turned off (or even disconnected.  Then turn it on after booting has finished.  I don't remember all the details, but I think that may be part of the problem. I would start looking for extension conflicts a well.

Chris, is there any reason you can't at least go to 8.6 on the small drive? That is the OS that added USB/FW support. You can also take the newer support files and put them in the 8.6 system folder but you at least have to have 8.6.

Likewise, 9.1 is much better than 9.04 and solved a lot of problems. You could at least have Firewire Enabler and Support 2.7 from 9.1.

Is this one of those machines that has to have the OS in the first 8 Gs of space? If so you may have to partition the drive and reinstall the OS.

Chris sorry if I keep annoying you with stray facts, but I am just writing as I brainstorm.  It has been a while since I have tried to solve a Classic OS problem.   1st IAWK above.  I also think you may have multiple problems going on here.  The Clean install may have caused a bunch of extension conflicts.  When you originally had this stuff working, the original installs for things like the firewire burner and the drivers for that unrecognized card may have disabled certain system extensions that were put back when you did that clean install.  How did you replace the drivers for those things after the Clean install?  If you just dragged them back into the new system folder, that may be where the conflict that did not previously exist started.  Sorry if I am stating the "obvious" But one needs to start somewhere.

Krissel's point about the OS being on the first 8GB is also a big issue.  If this machine is one of the ones affected by this issue, you may have been lucky withthe original OS installation, but when you did the clean install, the OS might have been written outside the first 8GB which would not allow you to boot.
I am going to go and find Apple's list of computers affected by this issue.

Check out this link

This describes at least one of your most likely problems.  I would assume that a beige G3 266 is old enough that it would be one of the G3's mentioned in this article.

Krissel -
I can upgrade the 8.5 to 8.6 no problem. I do need to have 9.x on the larger drive, though.

May go ahead and go to 9.1.

Thanks to you, swhitset, and  Bern!

Take care, all.

Hi Chris...

Although everybody's right about facing a multiprob. situation, I dare posting a probable 'cd recorder not found message' solution...I remembered the same thing happening with trying to burn a cd with Toast in OS 9.2 and i got the same warning... It turned out to be an extension conflict... but i never solved it until just now! And, voila, cd recorder found,  B) So.... In the extension manager you have to find the Disc-burner extension & USB authoring support and disable them.... Make sure Toast cd reader & USB support is enabled and then is The System  not confused anymore in which gear to use for burning!

I hope this works for you and Good Luck with the rest of this problem!

Greetz, Stef
