E-IDE & IDE?
« on: January 31, 2004, 06:30:24 AM »
I'm searching for a new internal (DVD/)Cd-rw with IDE interface.
But i ran into E-IDE connections also...
Now i'm wondering what E-IDE is, or what the difference is and most of all, can i use an E-IDE interface on normal IDE?

As allways, thxxxx wink.gif

At this point in time they're pretty much the same thing. smile.gif

E is for Extended or Enhanced IDE.Depends who you ask,

This is old stuff.

Anything that says IDE or EIDE now should work.

The important thing is whether there are Drivers for it.

Check here before you buy.

Also. Just to confuse you more. ATAPI. smile.gif

Wooow Kelly, how do you always come up with so much interesting links and information ohmy.gif
Thanks for the driver-check page, looks really helpful (although they didn't mentioned the brand Freecom, but i know they use Mitsumi hardware).
Glad to know that i don't have to doubt E-IDE, i'm hoping to find a combo drive for the slow writer.
It seems that combo drives are mostly slower than the fastest 52x writers out there.
Till now, i didn't found a combo drive faster than 24x (cd).. pitty unsure.gif
Might go for a fast cd-writer only.. not sure yet smile.gif

Thanks smile.gif

Wooow Bernie, reading that made my eyes go wacko.gif

But this is the most important part for me i guess:
QUOTE
* EIDE. Enhanced IDE is the Western Digital marketing standard that is often considered an official standard, but isn't. It incorporates ATA-2 speeds, ATAPI and calls for _two_ IDE buses, each of which supports a master/slave combination. It's popular, but it's not a standard. EIDE is specifically supported on the original Power Macintosh G3 series, although EIDE drives are generally backward compatible and can be used in most earlier Mac models.

So, as Kelly also mentioned, E-IDE is backwards compatible, so i can be sure of that.

Thanks people smile.gif
