Epson Stylus Color 777
« on: February 01, 2004, 11:04:59 AM »
I am using a stock Cube 450 with a gig of RAM and four partitions on the hard drive. OS 9.2.8 is on one of the drives and Jaguar is on another. When I boot from the OS 9 partition everything works fine and my printer is happy. If I boot from the Jaguar partition my printer is still happy and prints OS X apps as it should. But when I boot into Jaguar and then open Classic applications the printer won't print. A message says something to the effect that the printer has lost contact with the computer. I have looked at the printer setup/monitor panels and nothing seems to help. I am stumped.

I have been searching madly through various forums for a solution to my problem. The only thing that I have found so far that actually works is to open Classic, unplug the USB cable to the printer and plug it in again. Not too satisfactory, but it does allow me to use the printer. Any further suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks, Bernie. I am sure I have the proper drivers installed.

Bbob:  In X>System Preferences>Classic>Advanced  what are your settings?  Particularly "Use prefernces from home folder", is it checked?

Have you tried starting Classic from there with Extension Manager set to open when Classic is restarted to make sure it's loading the right extensions?

Sounds as if one extension isn't loading.....

I think you've got it. By George, I think you've got it.

I've tried printing a couple of times and it seems to work okay since I checked "Use preferences from home folder." I'll try restarting a few more times today to see if it holds up.

The Extensions seem to be okay.

I bow to your knowledge. I would have never found this by myself.

1.   No  such  O S  as  you denote.  I hope that you are using 9.2.2
2.  Use  "CUPS"

I had a recent Epson scanner (driver) issue, and after going crazy at their site, I stumbled on to this page (this is the page for your printer) which will allow you to send them an email and actually receive an answer! I was really shocked to have asked a question on a Saturday and gotten a reply on Sunday. My reply was very detailed--over 2 pages--and was quite helpful. (An auto-response email told me to expect a reply in one or two business days, so getting a reply on a Sunday was a surprise.)

The form you complete for the email is somewhat detailed, but be sure to put something in all of the required fields--even if you enter "I don't know". This will make sure the form is sent to them. Anyway, if you can't get an answer you need here, give that a try.

BTW, to find the link for other Epson product email support, go to: products->click on the product you have a question about->find the box on the right called "Product Information Technical Support->trouble shooting->email technical support.  This should take you to the page to answer some questions and submit your question.

Rob,

Thanks for the research. I am storing the Epson URL in a safe place. I may need it again.

Darn! (Or more forceful epithets!)

The problem came back.

I used RobW's Epson page. Filled out all the info in great detail. Here's the quite unsatisfactory answer I got back:

======

Thank you for taking the time to contact Epson.  It is my pleasure to
respond to your inquiry.

Unfortunately, you may or may not be able to get your product functioning
correctly in the Classic environment in OS 10.x. Difficulties arise due to
the Classic shell of OS 9 not being a true operating system, which causes
connectivity with hardware devices to become sporadic. If you need to print
with an OS 9 application, the best thing we can suggest to do would be to
restart your computer directly into OS 9.x if at all possible.

To restart your computer into OS 9.x from OS 10.x.

1. Click APPLE and go to SYSTEM PREFERENCES.
2. Click on the START UP DISK icon.
3. Click on MAC OS 9.x.x
4. Click on RESTART and then SAVE AND RESTART.

To restart your computer back into OS 10.x from OS 9.x:

1. Click on the APPLE ICON and then CONTROL PANELS and then START UP DISK.
2. Click on the MAC OS X icon.
3. Click on RESTART.

If you are not able to restart your computer into OS 9 from OS X, I would
suggest contacting Apple for further assistance regarding this.

=======

I will keep looking for an answer (sporadically, at least). It seems the only solution right now is a workaround: unplug the USB cable from the printer for a few seconds, then plug it back in again. If the printer doesn't show up, then select it in the Chooser.

Incidentally, from what I have seen in other places the same problem occurs with Panther X 3.x.
