Does anyone have any experience with QXP 5? How well does it work, is it reliable, should I upgrade when I switch to OSX or stay with the older version and use it in OS9?

Any advise will be appreciated.

Can't say about 5, but I can tell you that 4.11 is my personal workhorse in OS9.2. A combination of not wanting to upgrade (no need) and not wanting to switch to OSX. It's still the mainstream program down here in FL at just about every place I've worked.

Quark 5 is not OS X "native."

Both Quark 4 and Quark 5 are quite slow in Classic; Quark 4 also tends to exhibit screen display glitches in Classic. As a result, you really want to run Quark when you are booted into OS 9, not in Classic.

Quark 6, which is not yet shipping, is OS X native. (In fact, Quark 6 requires OS X; it doesn't run in 9.)

Hmmm. I thought QXP 5 was native. Do you know when QXP 6 is due out?

Should I bother to upgrade to 5 in the meantime? Looks like there are some ugly known issues with it according to their own website.

If my memory doesn't abandone me (which sorry to say happens more) i do remember the big Quark/HTML rendering example at the OsX software demonstration on Apple Expo (last year?).
They said Quark 5 would be OsX compatible soon but never seems to have managed that.
Now i read there will be a Quark 6 for that... hmmm (are they trying to catch up the numbers since they didn't released anything for years?).
Well, maybe i shouldn't say i don't like to use Quark anymore, but i must add that i never tried out Quark 5 either.
The most i saw was when i opened the program in Boston (at college) and noticed nothing much (layoutà had changed... i just closed it again.

Why not InDesign?

No official word on when Quark 6 will be shipping, other than "Real Soon Now."

I wouldn't bother upgrading to 5. I did and regretted it. $200 later (it could have been $300 if I didn't have a special deal) and it still doesn't run in OSX. It does run in Classic, but not without some problems. I would advise to just run Quark 4 in OS9 until Quark 6 comes out. I really feel like I wasted my money!

Sarah Lee, I think I'll take your advise and hold out 'til we see what 6 looks like.  Even then I may hold out based on their track record.
