Printer Sharing in Jaguar?
« on: March 20, 2003, 08:02:00 AM »
This may be a long shot, but perhaps somebody here can advise me.

I am thinking of hooking up an Epson printer to my TiBook, which is running OS 10.2.4. Don't anticipate any real problems with that part.

But, I also have a Wallstreet laptop running OS 9. Will I be able to use Printer Sharing via my Linksys router to also print from this machine? Has anybody done this or something similar?

Mac Help has shown itself to be a bit terse on this topic.

Is the Wallstreet using a USB Card?

"Shared printers must be connected to the built-in USB ports found on iMacs, iBooks, newer G3 PowerBooks, Blue and White G3 systems, and G4 systems. Plug-in USB adapters and USB PC cards are not supported."

Otherwise.

No, the Wallstreet has no built-in USB, nor have I tried a USB-PC card.

If fact, I haven't tried much of anything yet. It seems like a longshot.

I am now using a Photo Stylus EX for both laptops, but it has two output options. I'm using Epson's special USB adapter and Gimp Print for printing on the TiBook.

It might be a hit and miss thing, but I have had this running on a beige G3 with a third party PCI USB card and a Epson SP820.

Now all Macs here are on OS X so I have not messed with it for a while.

Thomas -

You may want to consider something like a Hawking or SMC print server to sit in between the two boxes and setup the printer as printer for both, that way you spool to the print server and then to the printer. The print server's IP becomes your lpd/lpr IP when you take the OS 9 box through Desktop Printer Utility to create the printer (make sure you have the ppd for that printer to load up).

Might check this article for more information on another's setup.

Hope that helps.

That is, unless you really want to run USB printer sharing through the classic UI in OS X. Not a great solution, but it will work.

You'll have to turn off the printer in OS X print sharing before you do that, according to Apple's KB.

Hope that helps.

Take care.

I read through the link to OX Hints and that sounds promising. However, I have a little difficulty following since I really don't understand what a "SMC print server" is. And what does SMC Barricade mean? Are these devices?
