iPod update 1.2.6 has problems
« on: March 20, 2003, 03:55:00 PM »
I have been trying to update my 20GB ipod to the new software version, (1.2.6) but I have not been successful.  The Updater keeps dismounting the ipod and then complains because the ipod is not mounted.

If I go and remount it, the updater then says I need to unplug, and replug the ipod into the computer.  When I do this, nothing happens.

Apparently I am not alone.  According to Macfixit, this is a common problem.  I guess I will wait and see if Apple has a fix.

Just thought I would report this to anyone here that may be having the same problem.

Yes, I've read reports at Apple's iPod discussion forums too. However I had no problems updating my iPod.

Have you tried to instead of plug the iPod back to the computer, plug it into the wall outlet instead. It just need the power, not the computer for the latter part of the update?

No, I haven't tried that yet.  I have been reading the Apple discussions as well (saw your post).   I may try that yet, but as if right now, I think I am going to wait.  I am of the opinion that Apple has released some bad software.  Too many people are having similar problems, some of which appear to have disabled their ipod.  Mine still works fine right now.  I don't think I will mess with that, until Apple responds.

I have successfully installed 1.2.6 on my 10Gb iPod.  Others have done so too.  I am led to believe that theproblems mentioned here, at the Apple Discussions and at ipodlounge.com are isolated.  Anyway, if the problems are with iPod functionality, one can always downgrade to 1.2.x or even 1.1.  If the problems affect the Mac itself, I believe that they can be reversed if one has a recent backup (iTunes lost etc).

In any case, this upgrade has fixed the battery indicator issue for me (used to go down to zero when accessing the HD) and I believe that battery management is indeed better.  I have used it extensively for the past couple of days and I am pretty sure I see a difference in the rate the battery time is depleted.

On the other hand one could subscribe to the idea that if it ain't broke don't fix it.

I read somewhere that it could cause problems if you have a system on the iPod installed. Maybe that's the case?

I don't have a system on there anymore, but I did have OS X.2.3 on there at one time so...?

The problems may be "isolated"  but they are still problems for those that have them.  They have been repeated by several people, and my problems match exactly those that others have reported.  Because of this, I happen to believe that the updater does have problems regardless of whether it seems to work for others.  My iPod works fine now, I see no reason to introduce a possibly unstable update to it (even if it would let me).

I don't have a system stored on mine, so maybe that's why no probs. . .And yes, having been a victim of an earlier "update" which screwed up something for me, I understand your resentment for their having released the update "prematurely", but I know that they can't foresee every problem that people run into, because of the many different ways that we use our machines, to say nothing of all the different programs that our out there that may or may not be compatible with what they put out.  I AM grateful, however, with how quickly they try and remedy the problems that we wind up with!  That's one of the reasons that I love my Mac!

Well, you *could* try the RESTORE instead of the UPDATE. It'll take a while to restore and reload all the songs from iTune etc, but it would be more stable.

Well,  That is what I finally did.   The restore seemed to work.  According to Macfixit, Apple has responded by saying that since installing a system on the ipod is an unsupported feature, There is no problem.  However, I had removed this system long ago (though probably not all of the invisible files that go with an OS X installation).  Personally, I think that Apple's excuse is laughable.  Even Apple proudly advertises the firewire disk capabilities of the iPod.  If they have not assumed that some people would install system software on a removeable firewire hard disk then they are shortsighted.

Now I know that I will probably get the "Apple is perfect and can do no wrong speech from someone"

Don't bother,  I have always bought Apple products because of the innovation, and will continue to do so.  However, I do not believe Apple is all that much more consumer friendly than any other Multi billion dollar company.

I'm glad you got it to work finally. I think you got it right when you said there might be some invisible files left... probably was it what caused the problems.
