External Audio CD Player...
« on: March 21, 2003, 11:59:00 PM »
Anyone have any ideas as to where I might find an external Audio CD player... if what I'm looking for even exists...

I've mentioned here before that I have trouble getting Audio CD's to play sometimes in the bay CD ROMS in either my Lombard or my Pismo... they will play in the PC which has just a slightly bigger tray. In the PB's anything around 60 min. in length plays fine... soon as it gets around 70 - 75 min. the last track or two will be messed up, garbled, skippy.

Ideally I'd like something that I can plug into my Yamaha speakers which have a standard audio jack and then by USB hook the works into the PB, so I can still make use of iTunes and SoundJam... something portable is OK, if it's of decent quality.

Just to complicate it more I'd like it so I don't have to dish out more than about $100 CDN. *ouch**

I know these CD's play in standard machines... they have played in the stores I've returned to.

You could try to buy a used Apple PowerCD.

Link

It connects via SCSI, so it would work with your Lombard.
It also plays Audio CDs as stand-alone CD-player and has audio ports so I believe you can connect your speakers to it.

Why don't you buy a cheap cd-writer?
They all play cd's as well, and that way you have an extra writer, wich might come in handy anyway.
They do sell seperate cd-rom drives but i'm not really sure if they still do that these days.
Anyway, as far as i know, all the external players/writers have a left/right audio channel output, that way you can even hook it up to your audio system.

Spartacus...

That is one sweet little unit!    I'd love one... if I can find it. I do have a firewire converter that lets me use SCSI on the Pismo... I did that for my Orb Drive. Well unfortunately the Pismo and the Orb detest each other... crashes so hard I wrecked two Orb disks. Might work with this or not... I dunno... but it's such a neat piece I'd be happy just using it separately.

Marcel...

Thanks for the suggestion, I've started looking at some to see if I can find something in my budget. The local Mac Store wants a ridiculous $399 CDN for an external firewire/USB CDRW...

Bill!...

Trust you to come up with the most eerrrrrm, "unique" solution... question is Can you sing? or will I go running for cover?

So... now you see why I keep him around Bill...
Still thought it's a cute sound file... swiped a copy for myself, iffn' you don't mind...

Spartacus... some of those long urls with symbols etc in them don't co-operate well...
But thanks very much for doing the search for me... I just copied and pasted. I got a quick look at them, but my connection is "dirt slow" right now...    so I'll go back for a closer inspection later.

I suppose by the looks of all those cables I shouldn't have any trouble hooking it to my external speakers via a standard audio jack... yes?

Spartacus... all three of the people selling those units say they'll only ship within the US...

I hate that...        We're only a few miles further... stuff otherwise generally flows freely, I'm willing to deal with the customs (no duty on puter parts... mainly security these days) and the extra shipping...

Bill...

I had a sound file that I just know would have you rolling on the floor... I've looked all over back up disks I have but I'm afraid it went *poof** in this last summer's PC HD blow up...
Dang!

Email the sellers. Sometimes they agree to ship to other places.
I had such case with eBay UK where the auction description said UK only, but when I emailed the seller he agreed to send it to me here in Germany.
