Online Multiplayer RPGs-any like the old DND?
« on: March 25, 2003, 09:32:00 PM »
Alert readers will recall that I was a fan of the old DEC VAX game DND (and found a PC-DOS port in the eighties that I continue to play on my Macs using RealPC).

Sometime in the last year, I succeeded in getting one of my ten-year-old twin boys interested in the game as well, and we periodically venture into the Dungeon together, usually one of us acting as Scribe and updating a book of Dungeon Maps I have been developing since the late seventies (there are five Dungeons, each with twenty levels, each level is 20 x 20 squares on graph paper) while the other 'drives' a Character.

The other day, I got to wondering whether there might be some more modern variant of this game available on the internet, in which two players could play together as a team, each one 'driving' their own Character, and helping each other deal with the various foes one meets inside the Dungeons, depending on who was better suited to vanquishing a particular foe, or less hurt at any given moment.

We began to look around at RPGs, and even tried out Avalon for about an hour as a 'test drive', and while it seems interesting, it's not what we are looking for.

Are any of you familiar with the old DND I am referring to and also know many of the modern RPGs and could recommend one or more of the latter as being similar in 'feel', 'style', or 'tone' to the former?

TIA,
