I finally got the G4 933 running...now what?
« on: March 27, 2003, 02:32:00 PM »
I just setup the new machine and it seems like it's working well.

They only installed OS 10.2.4 so there's no Classic.

I'm trying to set up the multiple users thing.
When they installed the OS they put the login as Administrator withe a password of
1234.
I'm probably going to have to wipe the HDD clean and partition so I don't know if I should do anything
right now.

I don't have it hooked up to the internet yet either.

So what do you think my first step should be?

Oh, I forgot.

When I go to users and try to change my name and password,
I put in the previous password but all I can do is cancel because all my choices are grayed out and the only button available is the cancel button.

The horror of it all.

I have to go pick up my son from school.
Be back later.

TIA

Your 933 . . .what do you do? Try to keep up with it!

But seriously folks . . .

I'd suggest doing what I did to compensate for mistakes in my first install on our mildmannered G4. Start over. It will take less time than you expect.

Boot from your CD. Wipe the drive with Disk Utility. Partition, as was suggested in proportions mentioned in your earlier thread . . . you've probably got tons of room.

Then, reinstall. Watching really carefully when you are asked any questions during set-up. What you choose now will be what you're stuck with, so avoid intricacies . . . since this isn't a laptop you're carrying around the country. For example, "OK" or nothing has always worked well as a password for me, where it's appropriate to your circumstances.

Watch your spelling, case, unnecessary spaces . . . they'll all be cast in stone. Set-up actually is easy, but take your time.

Congrats. and good luck, Gary S.

"I'm trying to set up the multiple users thing."
"I'm probably going to wipe the HDD clean and partition so I don't know if I should do anything right now."

You just answered your own question.

I'd say you have two choices at the moment.

1) Play around with it as is (like kps suggested before) and see or get the feel of X.

2) Wait till you have all the cables etc [whatever] ready to go for internet access.
ALL informational data written down (in front of you) and do your thing with setting the drive up the way you want it but bare in mind your future game plan on a second hard drive as far as size [and how many] of partitions in the present hard drive.

Depends on how antsy you are I suppose.

If I were in no real rush. Putts around with it as is for a few -insert whatever time here-. Sort of just to know how much to fasten the seat belt thing.

Why bother trying to change the users when you're going to have to again anyways when your gonna wipe the drive and do a split-city with em.

~~~
What I did on the second box was wait for my tv dinner ta cook in the micro ... downed the sucker in less than a minute (talk about heart burn) ... pulled out the CD and did the old wipe/partition thing. Yet hey.I used to wait for Santa [sure did look like pops a lot?] to drop the presents under the tree and take a peek-a-boo as soon as he split.
Well,
I have a problem.
My kid came home and he wanted to put a game on. Well I thought I'd create a user for him. We went to log in and that blue horizontal barbershop pole keeps spinning.
So after a while I thought well I'll just shut the machine down by pressing the button on the front of the unit.
When it restarted it was the same thing...Sam's login box with that barbershop thing spinning only this time my screen is all screwed up with a black band around it. his login thing just sits there and It won't startup from a CD.
Seem no way out of it.
Do I need to repair permissions? It seems like the machine isn't shutting down al the way.
I'm going back to it.
I shut it down again but haven't restarted yet. The power button on the front of the unit keeps pulsing grey to white like it doesn't want to shut down.
You put it to sleep. Hit (tap) the space bar.
 Scroll down the Apple menu up on the left or control + eject.
Thanks Bill,
I called the guy that fixed my computer and he said to hold the power button down for about 15 seconds and it did shut off the machine. He says when something funky happens and it won't shut down to do that.
I restarted, deleted my kids profile and i'm back to administrator and things seem alright....for now.
After I get used to this thing boy am i gonna wipe this HD clean and get OS9x on there pronto.
And get another HHD!
This is going to take some getting used to.
Go into your system preferences > energy saver and move the bars all the way to "never"plus uncheck all boxes till you know your way around.
That puppy threw me for a loop more than once when taking a break and then coming back and finding ..... -what the gosh-darnit <-
Bill,
That's good advice!
Actually it was one of the first things I did! I never did like the Energy CP or whatever they call it now.
You walk away and there's a screen saver going. I've got that sucker disabled too.
I'm going to go lay down and eat....I've had it for today.
Yeah. Take a break Gary.
I think that Button hold might be closer to 8 seconds.
You might want OS 9.x somewhere before installing some Games.
Darn!
Kentucky beat Wisconsin. It was a good game though, I thought Wisconsin might pull an upset but........
OS 10.2 is very pretty. I'm sure I'll use it some. I don't have alot of Carbon applications but I've at least got that Chess game.
Adobe Photoshop Elements 2 will work with it too.
I really do need to get it hooked up to the internet. I'll start pulling cable soon.
One question. This may sound like a stupid question but you know, I've never owned a tower before.
I have limited space in this house. Where do you who have towers put them? On top of a desk, under the desk, on the floor? I'm trying to set up a workspace and bought this nice  Amish solid oak computer desk but it's 28" wide with a slide out keyboard thingy. With the 19" monitor on there there isn't alot of room. I kind of dislike keeping the tower on the floor because it's going to collect more dust than it should. Might have to build something to stand it on.
Thanks Roy,
I suppose so long as it isn't sitting directly on the carpet it should be OK.
I'm going to start a new thread.
