Author Topic: USB PCI card problem (Read 2950 times)

I have just put a SwannSmart 2 port USB PCI card into a beige G3 running 9.2.

Apple profiler recognises the card, but any USB device I connect does not work. There was no software included with the card and I have checked that all relevant extensions are on. I've also rebuilt the desktop, tried both ports and swopped the card to another PCI slot - all to no avail.

Does any one know what extensions need to be on to enable a PCI card to work - or know of a website that lists this? Then at least I can check that I'm not missing any extensions.

Any other ideas much appreciated.

Hmm. The site states the card is Auto-Detect. Apple built-in USB drivers should work. Maybe a Bad Card?

We aleady have an Ethernet PCI card in the G3, which has never really worked. We just sort of forgot about it and left it alone. So we now have two PCI cards in place, neither of which works. For some reason, the computer is failing to find the cards. I suspect it's the system rather than the card(s) as it would be a bit of a coincidence if both cards were faulty.

Paul. Have you tried switching slots?

Or pulling that Ethernet Card?

There's PCI Voodoo sometimes.

Here's the list of extensions relating to the USB card on my machine (9600).

USB Device Extension
USB Mass Storage Support
USB Printer Sharing Extension
USB Software Locator
USB Support
USB2IDEDriver
USB2IDEShim
USBAppleMonitorModule
USBClarity

Depending upon the device plugged in you may need additional items like a control panel (mouse) or card reader's software, etc.

Still trying with this I'm afraid.

I've removed the Ethernet card and installed the USB card into another port. Apple System Profiler recognises it, but it still won't work.

Krissel - thanks for your help. I don't have four of the extensions you listed - USB Printer Sharing Extension - USB2IDEDriver - USB2IDEShim and USB Clarity. I've searched the Apple website but can't find reference to any of these. Are you using OS9.2? Do you know if these are Apple extensions or are they extensions you received with your card? Would you know where I might find them?

I'm using 9.1.

Two are listed as from Scanlogic, one from SoundVision and one is an Apple 9.1. Haven't a clue if they would help you but I put them in a folder, stuffed it and will send it to you.

USB MouseWare Module

USB Support

Those Mouseware ones are for my mouse.

Thanks Kelly - there's some interesting stuff there which may well hold the answer. I'll go through it all over the weekend.

Gary - thanks - that's helpful.

I've determined that it's the computer rather than the card - tried the card in another system running 9.2.2 and it was fine. The fact that System Profiler recognises it suggests to me that it is probably not hardware but a software issue. Having had a brief look at Kelly's link, I suspect that the answer may be in system extensions somewhere.

Problem solved!

Kelly - that last link you supplied held the answer. I basically had to remove some of the USB extensions from the system and replace them with older versions that enabled the PCI card to work.

I was about to suggest just buying a different Card.

You might have still had to do the same thing though.

Who knows?

I still say there's PCI Voodoo.
