Novice foray into pictures (photos)
« on: April 06, 2003, 06:53:00 PM »
I've got some jpegs I'd like to crop and/or resize. Sharpening them up would be gravy, but not as important. All I have is JPEGViewer and that QuickTime PictureViewer. I don't want to invest a bunch of money into software I may never use again. Does anyone know of something out there that might fit the bill for me?

Thanks!

Graphic Converter will more than fit your needs. If the original jpg is not sharp not much can be done to fix that.

The current version is 4.6,  I already have version 4.0 but their site does not offer an upgrade. Seems rather unusuall. ??

I've done a little of that stuff in iPhoto. Obviously not top of the line software, but the price was right.

There are no upgrades in the usual sense...you just download the new version.

NOTE: Be aware of the fact that Thorsen Lemke has changed GC's licensing. As of version 4.5 all previous registration codes have ceased to work. A new license is required.

Caffeine Software is apparently going out of business and if you go here:

http://www.caffeinesoft.com/

You can download for free the latest version of a suite of image processing & archiving softwares. While I have never used these myself, I have read elsewhere that people like them. Included are:

Curator, TIFFany, PixelNhance along with users guides.

I downloaded & tucked away just to have to make available for friends who might not want to spend $$ on Photoshop Elements, etc.

ColorIt 4.0 is a great program.  $50 via download, $55-CD delivery plus you get additional pattern libraries.

It's easy, intuitive, i.e., under Image>Scale you get a choice of inches, centimeters, pixels, picas, points.  You can do it by percentage, or pick the size you'd like.  Default is "Keep aspect ratio".  The Filters menu offers 9 options, Sharpen offers Unsharp Maks, Sharpen 1 or Sharpen 2.  IT OFFERS 16 LEVELS OF UNDO!! as the default. (Naw, I never make a mistake!    )

I don't see where Microfrontier has updated for X, but I use it 9.1 most everyday, on the iMac 333 and a Performa 6400/G3-400-136 ram sure does make Photoshop a "stand alone" program

One complaint-it don't do text worth a flip.  Needing to add captions, I usually save the jpg and open in AW, add the text, save as jpg and reopen in CI then print.  AW is often "too blue" for my tastes.

Yes, it opens digital camera card formats, it has a catalog function, it does "change resolution", also with "keep aspect ratio", the manual is pdf, and there is a demo download.
Do not fear your enemies.  The worse they can do is kill you.  Do not fear friends.  At worst, they may betray you.
Fear those who do not care; they neither kill nor betray, but betrayal and murder exist because of their silent consent.

Thomas, thank you for the bit of info and the link for the Caffeine software. PixelINhance is a nifty little program - it came with my Powerbook (June '02) and I'd forgotten about it, since I have and use the latest version of Photoshop. For basic, quick, image manipulation it does far more than iPhoto. It is OS X only however. Apple has a download link for it on their site as well:

http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/imag...ixelnhance.html

PixelInhance doesn't seem to allow resizing (from my brief look at it) but this shareware program, Photologist does, and gets high ratings at VersionTracker. It's $19.

For resizing and quick conversions, here's another nifty $15 shareware program, HBImage Processor:

Again - OS X only. Every time I look, there's more stuff out there for OS X. I could spend my entire life trying things out!

Great tip there from Thomas "TS" England. Thanks! I'll try to download it tonight.

Just in case, I've already bookmarked the link for Graphic Converter. Thanks kps.

What's with this Caffeine site? The download dumped a bunch of garbled text into my browser window, and the progress line said it was gonna take over 4 hours. Having no idea how I would decaffinate the gobbledgook, I stopped it.

Now, I should have said that I'm looking for something that will work in OS9. Paddy, are there older versions of the ones you mentioned? kps, is that GC thing for OS9 or X? (haven't checked - gotta run)

Jennie, your suggestion is the most expensive of the bunch, but might be the only option for me so far.

Well, gregg, if you can afford an Epson printer, that's where I got my Photoshop LE 4.0, for free.  It still suits my needs best, and can do just about anything.  The neat thing is, you'll discover all kinds of things to do to photos that you "never thought you'd use" but will!  It is virtually addicting.

Gregg, here's a simple image editor with resizing and cropping a few other handy tools (including some QuickTime effects):

Goldberg 2.3 for Mac OS 9 - and it's free. It also gets good reviews at VersionTracker.

Gregg Graphic Converter is available as a "carbon" app which supports OS 8 to OS X, or you can download the "classic" version which supports OS 8 through to OS 9.2.2

Graphic Converter is available for X and 9 as kps says. They claim the X version will work down to  8.6 with the most recent Carbon Lib but it doesn't for me. I had to download the specific PPC version.

Colorit! was my old standby before I got Photoshop and found it very capable in many ways. Prior to upgrading my processor I would use it when I was in a hurry cause I didn't want to wait for Photoshop to startup.

One good thing about GC is the batch conversion which would allow you to process a folder full of pictures if you needed them all a particular size.

See if you have a macaddict cd laying around with an old version of color-it or photodeluxe.
