OT: Baked Apple... what\'s your weirdest Apple storey?
« on: February 06, 2003, 12:14:00 PM »
An old chatfriend of me (and John Kentucky and William and Vijay) send me this url:
http://homepage.mac.com/aaronsteele/Personal8.html
This is amazing

This reminded me at a story i once heard, we were just astonished with that.
At a certain day, a woman comes in to an Apple reseller/repair office.
The deskman asked how he could help her, so she started to explain her problem.
L: "My coffee cup holder broke off"
M: "Your coffee cup miss?"
L: "Yes, it worked great till a few days ago, than it just broke off"
M: "Is this on your Mac computer?"
L: "Yes"
- silence -
M: "I'm sorry miss, but i can't really follow... you said your coffee cup broke off from the mac?"
L: "Yes, that's what i said, and i wanted to know when i could have it repaired.
M (getting confused and embarresed to ask): "And where exactly did you had this coffee cup?"
L: "Well, it came with the mac when i bought it".
M: "Oooh...".
L: "Everytime i pushed the button, it slided out just fine, but now the tray broke off, and i'm really missing it".

Offcourse, i put this in my own words but i thought this was the "best" that could happen in an apple repair shop, hahahaha.

Any other stories?

How about this - - -
Visualize for a moment. - It's 1979 and just prior to the digital revolution.  Typesetting just came out of  hot metal. Cut and paste was with a knife and rubber cement - - - and I just traded in my old Merganthaler JP-300 in for a Compugraphic 7600 typesetter for $25,000 and upgraded to an 8400 in 1983 for $40,000 and to think it came a 512k and took 20 minutes to boot up every morning - - - and 500 typefonts cost $20,000.

Then one day in 1985 I got a telemarketing call from Apple Computer - and I asked - What's an Apple?

Now I know!
Mike

I remeber once on eworld, a woman was asking a tech how to fix the date. She said, it say says March 2. He said it is March 2. She said nevermind.
Not bizarre but it's how i remember eworld.

Hahahaha
I bet she felt pretty stupid once she realised that, lmao.
But than again, maybe her date always said "march 2" and that day... it just happen to be march 2?

Didja hear about some guy who one day decided he should clean the heads on his Imation Super Disk Drive? Being a most clever fellow, he reasoned that the little diskette used to clean the floppy drive on his old 7600 would do the trick.

So he put a few drops of that alcohol stuff on the pad of the cleaner diskette and inserted it in the Imation drive. The ensuing sound was most reminiscent of a train wreck (or so I understand). Despite assorted frantic attempts, the diskette would not eject.

In great desperation a panic call to Imation…The tech had to excuse himself to keep from laughing at the caller. After a moment or two, he returned and advised that Imation would overnight a replacement drive at no cost and to please return the carcass.

How foolish can some people be?

Mrious-
I had stated 'telemarketing' failing to define Apple's introduction to me as an invitation to attend a local Apple demo.  In those days, Apple reps. would set up shop in a hotel and invite graphic designers to attend 'free' seminars to become familiar with what they were selling.  Which I did - but I immediately went into 'denial' because I had just invested a long-term investment with Compugraphic for an 8400.  Eventually CG was bought out by Agfa but they never managed to produce a WYSIWYG product other than the "Advantage" system.

Those were the days - my eyeballs have never fully recovered.  All  command strings were displayed in 1/2-power illumination - sometimes you would end up programming a three-line command string just for one line of type.  Linotronic and Berthold must also be familiar systems to you !?

Ironically - as much as these systems cost, I made a good deal of profit with them but the 'window of opportunity' was only open until Apple / Quark / Adobe came on strong in the early 90's - which is about the time I started phasing out pre-print prep and concentrated solely on concept and design.  Seems as though everyone in the business was giving typography away for nothing - and it really showed for several years.  I must say however - times have changed and typography is looking pretty good these days.  I can only imagine that the "designer royalties" for typeface designs must be out the window with all of the plagerism.

They sure doooo
Actually, Berthold was later on (early 90's?) taken over by the Belgian company Barco Graphics and changed the operating platform to Barco.
This was one of the top products on the market to make digital publishing.
I tried to get into Barco, to learn the system but they told me i can't learn it anless i worked somewhere where they  have installed a Barco Workstation.
So after a while i gave up hope, lol.
Barco now is kinda falling appart, and in the mid 90's two (or more) of the leading programmers for the Barco OS (Unix) started their own company witht the intention to go write software for Apple computers.
The result, Art-Work systems made it's Art-Pro software, at this point still the best and most intuitive DTP software on the market.
Illustrator is amazing but Art-Pro does thinks that you thought was inpossible without a dark room and spending half a day there.
ArtWork Systems now just been taken over by another company (not Belgian anymore) and the latest ArtWork (7) software should run OsX but... we tried it and there are many bugs in it
the Os9 software doesn't even want to print... grrrrrr

Still, those days were just great.
When i started to work with a company who invested in ScanGraphic, i quickly started to add codes in the job none of them ever worked
I made jobs (advertisings) that automaticly changed measurements if you just changed the horizontal and vertical values... amaaaaazing.
I made flexible datasheets for the European folders for UPS, as they came in like 15 languages or so, they had to be flexible to addapt on the different countries.
Offcourse... although i was the only one doing all this...i was also the only one who crashed the imagesetter with codes he couldn't understand, hahaha.
Oh well, a "soft" resset madeup for that... lucky for me that "soft" resset button(s) were easy to get to

The last hot-lead Mergenthaler Linotype in our area was hauled to the scrapyard last week. It was in the print shop at Fort Hays State University. No one remembers the last time it was used.
I'm not a complete idiot -- a few parts are missing!
