Is it possible that the 670 who have never posted are really names just created by Bernie before he settled in on his official user name--Bernie?? [Thinking] Sorry, but somebody had to BIOB--and I was thinking that Harv might be busy

Does this mean that MammaMoose is innocent?

RogerF:

MamaMoose is  (always) (never)  innocent!  . . . choose one.

However, you're guilty, as I think Tom's near-legendary appellation has only one lower case "m".

I've been a lurker of late for two reasons. First my job takes up a whole lot more of my time now then it used to and secondly since using osx exclusivley for the last year or so I don't have nearly as many troubles as I did w/ the classics and because of that I don't as much to offer in the way of helping others. I must also admit my skills at fixing problems in classic os's has faded since the switch. I lurk because this board is like a favourite newspaper delivered daily, a must read even if I only have a short time for surfing. And most of what I have learned about osx, I have learned here. Love this place!

The framework of TS limits the topics and activity, so unless your a MacGuy/Gal, or a funny sort of writer, OT’s, reading is all you can do. Reading & writing is time consuming and it captures to much of your attention. If your life is already full of activity and you don’t have a problem with your Mac, and your not looking for one, you build the Mac to your needs, and when it works you leave it alone.

The time will come when your Mac will work like your Refrigerator, can you imagine having a BB on a ready for the public technology, telling jokes about Maytag and upgrading your ice cube trays?

The BB’s are sorta kinda like a call-in radio show, most folks listen and some have two phones. Time spent listening is shared with other tasks mostly, ears don’t seem to get in the way like eyes do. If a guy like me is waiting for his ears to hear something, (phone) then his eyes and fingers can go about doing stuff while his ears are working. But for the most part folks are working with their eyes and hands, leaving their ears just sticking out there surfing the air waves. There's a brain in there somewhere, but that's an OffTopic topic.

The future will have ViaVoice and audio, so if you need to read it or listen to it, speak it  or speech to type it, the option will be there =ing More activity.

Around 2006 you’ll be cruising in your Beemer/Caddy/Krusemobile and stop-in at TS, you can control the browser with audible signals, it’s can read to you anything posted, you can respond verbally and it will type what you say. This is where the internet is going, where you can take a picture on the highway and send it via satellite anywhere you  choose. Talk about it, and your words will magically write out what you say. Ask a guy like the Surfmeister to find info about your next stop, your next meeting, the people, places, weather, hazards,  everyday info that you may lack the time to find.

TS will be like a laid back Mac-cyber coffee shop, (Ok, Tea is and option) you wouldn’t want to stand in line, now would ya?

I agree! Lurkers or lookers are fine with me. I didn't post for a long time...but did look at least weekly! It's all in what one is looking for or has time for. Welcome Iain, Kruser, Whisper and all others out there!

Dick, I went to the Spring Game yesterday and it was great. The Scarlet won...but they were trailing for most of the game.  Zwick did most of the QB'ing for the scarlet. Krenzel started but only played one quarter. I think the coaches wanted a good look at Zwick. New QB on the Gray (Troy Smith) looked very impressive...also new place kicker...Josh Huston looks real good, so much so that he played both Scarlet and Gray. I think Nugent is still the starter though. He still has IT!!!  McMullen started for the Gray and looked good...great passing.

Lurkers or be they shurkers - - - I don't care.  Speaking for myself, I joined and have numerous post related to 'vintage' mac problems.  I have to say many of the 600+ are probably in my camp - - - but too afraid to ask - - - especially when the 'upper class TSD'ers' starts taunting them with how much speed and gismo's they have that without them they would not have been able to attain new found status of computing capabilities.  Granted that's where we all want to be - but for reasons too numerous to mention - we are not.

On the bright side - - - the TS site for my purposes has always provided enough member response to my problems and have come through with some fantastic insight.

Sorry you feel that way Mike.

There is no "Upper Class" here.

Based on new machinery or otherwise.

I also don't recall anyone being "taunted" for using older machines.

For exammple.

In your most recent post you recieved nothing but offers of assistance.

No taunting.

There's no need to feel that way.

Kelly:

You paid more attention to my first paragrah than my second statement of gratitude - which I always try to sign-off with.

I don't spend enough time thinking about how my words get interpreted from the receiving end, (I'll have to work harder at that.).

The point I was trying to make is - - - not all site members are up to speed with the latest bells and whistles - to hear about Jaguar and !0.2X problems in and of itself establishes a 'class' of participants relative to 'vintage mac'ers'.  For a lot of members (myself included), we have older issues and most of you guys and gals have been there - done that.  I know it - but a lot of other first timers don't.

As always - I very much appreciate the site and the insight.

Mike. Yeah. There's what we mean and what others read.

New machines and OS X are simply reality.

There's nothing to be done about it.

Everyone has to make their own peace with that.

What I take exception to is about the attitudes espoused here.

Pretty much every Member goes out of their way to make people welcome.

There's very little of the usual OS X vs older OS stuff.

No one is judged, that I've ever seen, by what machine they have.

I don't know if there's anything to your contention that

others on older machines are put off by Jaguar and such.

Really I kind of doubt it.

I think many members are either "shy" or diinterested.

I hope you can take my words to heart and not feel "alienated".

And I encourage anyone to make that first "leap" and post.

Thanks Kelly:

As a former teacher/mentor once advised me - - - I would never learn if I don't ask questions.

Most of which I have learned from 7.1 -9.2 was achieved here on TS - - - and, I have learned from questions others has asked as well - - - leading me up to the latest OS problems I can't even relate to.

I might have mentioned this in a previous post but - it's another world out there in terms computing task performance.

I've seen first hand - kids and parents throwing aside 'assembly instructions'  and 'operational procedures' simply because they won't take the time to read the book or follow specific instructions and plunge blindly into finding hasty solutions.  I suspect that many who have enrolled in TS membership fall into this category and refuse to get too "in-depth" with the problem solving solutions.  So it seems a good number of the people I know only want and "quick fix" and not too much of an indepth analysis as to the root cause of a problem. I guess they are better consumers than I am.

As always - thanks.

I love this site. I have always received courteous, helpful answers to my questions about my little old iMac. Often, I will find the answers to some questions just by reading the posts. Today I learned something new: MamaMoose is a man?

TS reminds me of a typical public school classroom...relatively few students raise their hands and try to answer the teacher's questions, while the rest are content to remain in the background for a variety of reasons.

Just like in school, there are no stupid questions, and those of us who raise our hands do our best to have the correct answers.  Sometimes we do and sometimes we don't.  Since a lot of computer problems require a trouble-shooting give-and-take conversation vs. a simple answer, there are some limitations to a process that doesn't allow immediate feedback like a conversation.

Many common questions can be answered by utilizing the search function and I try to start there before I move on to posting a question.

My impression is that many of the folks here at TS have a wide variety of gear, with relatively few people actually having the latest-and-greatest Macs.  I have experienced a significant and pleasant lack of Gearheadedness at TS.

My time spent at another well-known board has been just the opposite experience, with many people obsessed with how fast OS X operates on this-or-that Mac, etc., etc., and some anguished posts when a new Mac appears shortly after a recent purchase.  And these new models may sport a mere 100MHZ speed-bump and maybe a new video card, nothing to cry over, IMHO.

TS is unique in my online experience.  Whether you are young or "mature," have an aging 7300/200 (like me!) or a brand spanking new G5 (aren't those out YET???) the denizens of TS are a convivial bunch of Macophiles.

I might still be writing on a piece of slate if it wasn't for this place...

Hey, I just noticed that I've been promoted to Super Poster.
I'm so proud.
