Airport question.
« on: April 27, 2003, 02:31:00 AM »
I should of payed more attention to all the threads on airport and it's capabilities.

When using airport (or wireless of other sorts.D-link comes to mind),does all the machines involved have to be on?

Let me explain what I saw again today to give you an idea of what I'd like to do.

I was at a friends home that has cable. They have a 17" PB/14" ibook/iMac FP and a PM.
The iMac FP is in the wife's office, PM is in his office and they both carry around their books (well she does with the ibook more than he does with the 17") anywhere in their two story home, back or front yard. They told me either book works great even next door running through airport extreme.
Fact we were in there back patio sitting around yacking and I forgot to mention about receipt I needed on a purchase for work related right off.
He said no problem as he opened the 17" there on the patio table and typed it up. Turned the PB towards me to asked if what he typed was ok. Yep.
Didn't see what he did after that (two second click) but one of the kids was heading upstairs and he told the kid to bring down the copies from his office on the way back down. Two perfect printed copies!!

I know I should of asked what the scoop was on their set up but didn't.

I would love to have a set up like that!!!  I'm sure many of you do now but ... the kicker with my home is dial up. I never turn my 933s on at the same time unless transferring through ethernet.
One 'puter and all the little goodies (printer etc) are on one side of my home and the other 'puter and it's toys are on the other side around 60 feet away. Both are airport ready but no cards yet. I now have a laptop that already has an airport card.

So back to my main question.
What is the story with wireless? All machines need to be on for the laptop to say hey?
I mean the printer of course has to get it's commands from whatever 'puter its hook up to ... correct?

WiFi is great, I like my set up, which is ADSL-->Modem-->D-Link Router->>G4 Tower->>Dell laptop and the 12" PB.

To use the internet is no problem, you turn on any one machine and you're surfing. To file share or print , the the respective machine has to be on. USB printer sharing only works with my Macs. The Dell has to be physically connected to a USB printer but there is a way with additional software (DAVE).

You could get a network printer($$$) or a print server and in that case your other machines would not have to be turned on. The printer would have it's own address (through the NIC card) on your network. It could even be a wireless NIC.

Remember this though...If you get Airport Extreme and connect any 802.11b device it'll "throtle" down your whole network to 11Mbps from 54Mbps. So if you go for a network printer, make sure you can get a 802.11g card for it and that it's compatible with that protocol.($$$$$)

[EDIT: Overlooked one thing...the Airport Base Station has a USB port for a printer...

"To use the internet is no problem, you turn on any one machine and you're surfing."

Other than the laptop right? Because the machine 'has' to be hardwired (phone wire connected) to an outside dialup?

No, not in my case... the router makes the connection (PPPoE) through the ADSL modem(which is always on and connected)...it does it on demand, it's seamless and instantaneous.

With a dial-up, I'm not sure how it'll work. One Airport Extreme Base does have a modem built in but my understanding is that it's for dialing in to your network...not sure if you can use it to dial out.

Ya have to excuse the gray matter. My brain has turned into mush lately.
Even common sense logic went south.

Too many coals in too many fires all at once for the last couple of weeks.
Need ta pop a small hole in the side this kids skull and let some of that compressed air escape.

Guess I should see what (or how) an airport base or whatever cooks.

AirPort Base Station (Graphite): How to Set Up

"The setup described for cable or DSL modems should work with dial-up connections. No changes need to be made to the Base Station."

In our case we did not buy a base station.  Simply put an airport card in the iMac that is almost always on and always connected to the cable modem.  The laptop now works in all but the furthest corner of the house.  This set up does require that the iMac be on and not asleep.

You didn't think we wouldn't notice this buried in the rest?!!

More details!

Jennie it isn't what you're thinking. <gr>

Short version:
The little tooth pick drove (someone else driving) up to the jobsite at 10a.m. hopping mad looking for her [recent] X hubby. Even a block away people could tell she was four sheets to the wind.
Found him and they (well more like one sided) went at it in a yelling frenzy.

I went over to tell the guy -leave this crap at the door or don't open the door- bit.
She said *mind you own f***** bees-wax*
While she was saying this I turned towards her and her swinging arm was already at its mark. Nailed me right on the old choppers.

What did I do afterwards? Nothing.
Her X hauled (do mean haul) her back to the car asap. He said whatever to the driver and the little b*t*h left.
He came back an apologized and that he'll explain later.
Everyone went back to doing it to it.

Later ... his version.
"She's a bar-hopping little bitch! I put up with it far to long and the clincher was one day I came home early and she was passed out in bed with some guy who was also out like a light. kicked her out legally but the courts said she was entitled to $$$$.
Fought it but ...
My lawyer said it wasn't specified on the 'how' her monthly $$$ was to be handled. That he might be able to specify the 'how' as long as she signs an agreement.
Did the old sign this while ......"

For her to get her money each month, she had to physically go and sign/pick it up at the designated bank on the third Friday of each month.
He set up an account at a off-the-wall bank 90 miles away up in the mountains that closes at 3p.m. on Fridays.

My first question: Was that why she came today? "Yeah. That was her first of many payments/pay backs ... whatever ya want to call it. Heard she was plastered last Friday and missed her calling".

Second Question: You don't seriously believe you can get away with this do you?
"Nah but I'm going to let it ride till she can get her own lawyer or lawyers to unravel the red tape".

After his side/story and her first impression ... forgot all about her popping me one.
