And like the Photoalbum in iPhoto you can't use the Music Store unless you live in the States. That REALLY SUCK!!! Apple should have gotten deals with all supported countries (Swedish is one of the supported languages in Mac OS X) before they went out with this.

So here we sit and twiddle our thumbs, can't order nice photo books or music online. BLAH!

I just downloaded the new iTunes and man, the music store is sick. This is so cool. I'll start paying, given they make available CD's that no one has on the filesharing networks.

Only good thing with new iTunes is that I can listen to my friends libraries, even if they are not in my own network!

To get it working:
Open up port: 3689 in your Router
Turn on Sharing in iTunes
Then your friends can listen to your Library

If you want to listen to others:
In iTunes do cmd-k and type in the ip-number of your friends connection and away you go!

Woooow, interesting Petra
One question... did you just downloaded the stand alone installer Petra?
Cause i still don't see the new iTunes (and QuickTime 6.2) in my software updater?
And yes, i do feel the lack of Apple to support other countries outside the USA with it's services.
Just starting this week, we are able to buy a .Mac package in local Apple store.
This is Belgium but i guess other European are able to do so to now.

I didn't see it either, Marcel, so I went for the standalone installer.

Let's hope Apple get's this "happening" in other countries soon...they should, because they plan to offer it for Windows users by the fall...so Macs first, eh!

Yes, I used the standalone installer since the Software Update only had the iPod update (1.3).

If you use iChat, send me a message and I'll play with you: cyberpetrah

I felt pretty grumpy about the US-only thing this morning -- just how often is Apple going to go on pulling that particular stunt?

But my mood improved when I saw your later post,  Petra.

This document explains differences in the AAC and MP3 codecs that can be used in iTunes 4.
There's some interesting stuff about the mechanics of it all at, among others ... Fortune!
For instance (Devin Leonard writes): "anybody who tries to upload iTunes Music Store songs onto KaZaA will be shocked. Each song is encrypted with a digital key so that it can be played only on three authorized computers, and that prevents songs from being transferred online. Even if you burn the AAC songs onto a CD that a conventional CD player can read and then re-rip them back into standard MP3 files, the sound quality is awful."

How do I open up that port in my router? Where is my router? I didn't see that in Network Preferences.
Sorry for being such a neophyte.

Sorry for being such a neophyte.

If you don't have a router you don't need to open the above mentioned port, then it's hopefully already open by your Internet provider.

A router is an Airport for instance or a Dlink, a gadget that sits between the internet and your network so more than one computer can share the Internet (some also use them as a way to protect themselves, such as a firewall).

Yeah, I got one of those. I didn't check closely. I'm on ethernet, but I have a router because when I got on my roommate routed together, and when he left they didn't take me off it.

My router is supplied by my service provider (RCN). So how do I open that port?

Andrew. Which Router is it?

iTunes 4 sharing - works outside your subnet

Andrew, a lot of routers have browser administration - you enter the following URL:

192.168.1.1 or for DLink routers, 192.168.0.1 - from there, just cruise around until you find the applicable screen that lets you open ports. Usually the functions are relatively self-evident (or at least from my not-exactly-vast experiences with 3 different routers, it has been)

I don't use a router or airport network and my Firewall on OsX is offline by default.
But still i can't get this sharing to work
Others can connect to me, but i can't connect to them.
Is it possible this is due to my ip provider? or any other thought?

P.S. i did created a new item on my Firewall on OsX, given the port and named it iTunes but again... the Firewall isn't even activated.
Oh yes... file sharing is enabled in iTunes
