Title: Safari 5.1.10
Post by: Jack W on November 21, 2019, 10:22:14 AM
I screwed up and messed up Safari on my iMac.

Safari will not even load TS, giving the error below:

I would like to reload Safari, but don't have the DMG for 5.1.10

Is there anyway to download Safari 5.1.10.dmg?
It is no longer on the Apple site.

Or is there a more recent Safari version for Snow Leopard?

I would think this is the perfect job for Time Machine and/or whatever bootable backup you have. :dntknw:

Or you can download it here: https://support.apple.com/kb/dl1569?locale=en_CA

Thanks Paddy - I already tried that - but the page doesn't show any download button,
just a ref to the security content (see below):
'Download icon' is non-functional

Jack, have you cleared your browser caches lately? Do you have any javascript blockers installed? :dntknw: My TM backup only goes back to April of 2018 and TM doesn't like to install older software on top of new in Mojave macOS 10.14. I'd probably have to try Carbon Copy Cloner to retrieve an older version.

Jim - how did you get to that screen?
Title: Re: Safari 5.1.10

To get the image:
Shift-command-4, the standard "capture a portion of the screen" shortcut.

To get the screen:
I simply followed/clicked Paddy's link in her previous post: https://support.apple.com/kb/dl1569?locale=en_CA (http://)  :dntknw:
I think that link is for Canadians! Note the "locale=en_CA" as a value in the url. However, even if you use: https://support.apple.com/kb/dl1569?locale=en_US (https://support.apple.com/kb/dl1569?locale=en_US), the page looks exactly the same. But see it using the second (US) link helps, perhaps your ISP is concerned that Canada may be trying to influence something... again!   :wallbash:

Unfortunately, that button doesn't seem to show in your browser? What browser is that? Have you tried other browser brands (Firefox/Opera/Chrome)? :wallbash: There is a lot of javascript in the code, make sure you have enabled javascript, at least on that page and turn off any privacy extensions you might have.

Lastly, clear your browsers caches, it will continue to load a cached page until you get rid of it. I know the command is in the Develop Menu, but the shortcut option-command-T might work anyway.

I finally got the dl screen to show in firefox Mavs version.

But, guess what, the download button dl'd the security content listings instead of the dmg.  I already had that.

Bummer!

I recovered the app from my TM backup.

Still same behavior.

I guess I'm SOL.

You got the 'security' updater when you clicked the blue "Download" button?! :wallbash:   Mine was called "Safari5.1.10SnowLeopardManual.dmg" (50.7 MB). :dntknw:

Did you move/rename the old .plist files? That may be where the problem(s) actually are. It could be a damaged directory file that doesn't even read the whole plist. It could be damaged values in the .plist. It could even be a damaged drive. If the "same problem/behavior" occurs with the backed up app, it may not be the app that's at fault. I suggest looking at restarting the app with blank/default preference info.

You don't have to delete the current plist file, simply re-naming it will prevent the app from trying to use it. I usually just add "-OLD" between the usual name of the file and the ".plist" part (don't lose the "." period). I can't remember exactly where Maverick stored plist files, but it's probably in HD/your user name/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
Please let me know if anything improves.

I got the same thing as Jim did - the .dmg file, as one would expect.

Let's try one more thing - put it in Dropbox for you:

And if reinstalling from a fresh copy STILL doesn't work, then it's on to other things.

Change your DNS settings - that often fixes things.

https://blog.pcrisk.com/mac/12572-safari-cant-establish-a-secure-connection-how-to-fix - instructions in there for that, as well as various other things to try.

  • Quit Safari
  • Shutdown the Mac (Sometimes a simple "Restart" doesn't wipe out currently loaded plists)
  • Start the Mac
  • Select the Safari plist file and change the name to com.apple.Safari-OLD.plist You'll probably be asked to enter your computer/admin password.
  • Open Safari and test for correct ops
Please let me know if anything improves.

Tried the plist you described - shut down, restarted - same old

Thanks,

• First, I used TimeMachine to recover a 1-month old safari.plist & safari.rss.plist
- Same-old

• I did a SD! clone of my Macintosh HD

• Fired up another account, and TS bombed there also, so it's not a problem with my account, but at the global level.

• Rebooted and ran the safari 5.1.10 installer Paddy pointed me to, and rebooted.
- Same-old

I tested many other sites I visit frequently, and they all loaded no-problem, such as MacInTouch, and others.
TS! is the only site that gives me a problem.

I also did many of the recommends of ADB to no avail.

Anyway, this is not critical, since I normally use firefox as my preferred browser,
and TS works fine there.

Thanks ABD and Paddy for your input and suggestions!

And thanks Paddy for the safari dl link.

I am putting this to rest for now.

Much appreciated!

Jack

How are you emptying Safari caches?

Non-sponsored sites:
  • MacWorld (https://www.macworld.co.uk/how-to/mac-software/clear-safari-cache-3496193/) This is the British site, but it's in English (mostly :p )
  • TechAbout.com (https://www.techbout.com/clear-safari-browser-cache-on-mac-20406/)
  • clear-my-cache.com (https://clear-my-cache.com/apple-mac-os/safari.html)

• Thru Apple menu in safari and
• Via OnyX

Are there other more effective, or more desirable ways?

I'm all ears, but shout loud since you live a distance away

Thru Apple menu in safari
I'm not familiar with that. Can you please post a screen shot? Perhaps the Apple menu is different while Safari 5 is active, I don't remember.

In later OSes, there is an "Empty caches" menu item in Safari, if you enable the Develop menu. That's the suggestion and instructions in all three of the links I listed. You'll have to enable that in Safari Prefs, if it is available in your OS.

To get a new version of any web page, any browser will have to actually download the page again. But it will first try to use the page it last downloaded and stored in the browser's cache (memory), even if that page is corrupt/damaged or has old historical data.

I must have forgotten to answer the empty cache question:

OK, that OS probably didn’t have a Develop menu. And they used  “E” rather than “T”. At any rate, that’s what would/should have fixed any cache problem.

All I can offer is that there is something in these pages that Safari 5 did/cannot handle.
