Tech / Love the new Mac, but have one problem

Yup, but never have bothered to look at the Log in options. Never Logged Out?And never have looked at the security+privacy one till right now.Yes, I learn something every day.I will take a look at doing that, but I sure dont want to have to type in a password if I spend a moment in the kitchen or play ball with Lilly in the back yard.

There is a free application Caffeine that resides on the top menu bar. If you click it, the cup is filled (with coffee?) and the screen will not go into sleep or screen saver. I have used it often/daily, especially for video conferencing, etc. Sounds perfect for you in going to play ball with Lilly.

Tech / LibreOffice 4.1 now posted for download.

I just used OO, I think, to import a .wmf 'image' file for my wife. I think I remember it reporting an update was available. We seldom use it (or LO) and it is sometimes frustrating to be trying to use an app and it wants to be updated... rolleyes.gif

Correct, OpenOffice was just updated to 4.0 and LO to 4.1. I keep both updated and use whichever is most stable. My favorite of all those varieties was Symphony (IBM), but that is no longer being developed.

Tech / Microsoft changes licensing rules
« on: March 13, 2013, 05:40:18 PM »
Since I had recently purchased MS Office 2011, this is a welcome change... now installing on more than one computer. Since I have an iMac and a MBP for travel, this helps.

(I never thought i would say “good news” from MS)

Community / 42nd Anniversary

Thanks everyone. Day was quiet (I work from home, so makes it easier). Then we worshiped at midweek Lenten service (and as pastor I did have to preach, too!). Good day all around.

Krissel, when people ask about the number of moves, I have started saying, “Well, every time I decided to move, she came along. Can’t seem to get rid of her.” laugh.gif

Community / 42nd Anniversary
« on: February 20, 2013, 10:56:41 AM »
Today my wife and I celebrate 42 years of marriage. That year, the high temp was 10°, and we stood in the snow banks for photos, then that night it got down to -40° (temp, not wind chill). Yep, northern Minnesota wedding in the dead of winter. Where else?

In the mean time we have moved 28 times, traveled in most states except Alaska, and five in the northeast. We adopted two boys. Now we have a wonderful daughter-in-law, five delightful, loving grandchildren, and one great grandson.

God has been good. Thank you, Lord.

Tech / Recommendations for a wireless modem
« on: January 09, 2013, 09:56:42 AM »
I have a Linksys Wireless-G (2.4 Ghz, 54 Mbps) modem and have used for five years; paid I think $59 for it at the time. Simple set up, moved from Missouri to California with different carrier and never a problem. I can hardwire up to four through Ethernet.

Tech / Great Internet speed testing site updated
« on: September 26, 2012, 02:27:35 PM »
My results were similar to Paddy’s 35% less than the average user on my provider.

When I tried another site, both speeds were more than double from this site.

But I’m an old codger, so what would I know. wink.gif biggrin.gif

Tech / One small step for me, one giant leap...
« on: August 18, 2012, 11:24:39 AM »
Congrats on the leap of faith or...

Windows Media Player I don’t think has been updated in seven years. Real Player was updated last April, so not sure what its status is. But VLC and Perian have basically provided everything needed. Flip4Mac also allows Quick Time to play WM content.

Tech / DTP apps less costly than Quark etc.
« on: April 14, 2012, 11:01:57 AM »
Back in the day the best low cost DTP was Personal Press from Silicon Beach, later acquired by two or three others, and eventually swallowed by Aldus which had Page Maker. I eventually bought PM, but still liked the simplicity and power of PP.

I use Pages for quite few projects for page layout stuff, especially multi-page bulletins for worship. Because I am editor of our national church magazine I needed to share files with the layout editor, meaning Adobe InDesign was required. Four years ago I was able to purchased Adobe CS4 Adobe CS4 Premier Collection (Acrobat Pro, Bridge, Device Central, Dreamweaver, Drive, Fireworks, Flash, Illustrator, InDesign, Media Player, Photoshop) for less than $600. I use Acrobat Pro, Photoshop, and InDesign most. At that $200 for each, divided by four years is $50/year for the apps.

I also produce seminary and congregation teaching materials, which often include diagrams, drawings, etc. I find that if I do it in Illustrator then make PDF of it, I can effectively import into most programs. For my serious academic work I use Mellel (its support of Hebrew is superb, as well as auto titles, style sheets, etc.). For shorter projects I like Nisus Writer Pro. Neither is ideal for graphics support. And thus, I pull out Pages for special projects.

Generally you could say I am a DTP/word processing junky who can’t make up his mind.

Tech / I use NeoOffice rarely
« on: October 04, 2011, 08:48:30 PM »
I had used NeoOffice for some time, but also have LibreOffice. The version I use most is Symphony (from IBM). It only includes Writer, Calc, and Presentation, but that is all I need. It has done a reliable job and does not crash. LibreOffice will occasionally.
