Which of you guessed new iMAC's?

Sounds like in addition to the aftermarket for little Apple key decals there will also be one for plastic screen covers that make the glossy screens into a nice non-reflective surface.  Like this:

Gregg,

You can get the specs and dimensions of the previous gen. iMacs here.

Thanks Bill. The dimensions or the "exoskeleton" haven't changed. I guess it was just the "skin" and the "guts".
Ya gotta applaud those bunnies for sacrificing their hearing just so some guy in Cupertino can have better TV reception.

They've been out for two days and there is already an updater for them. smile.gif Maybe a new record for updates!

You probably have to have one to get Software Update to show it. dntknw.gif

Appears to be graphics card related. Thinking.gif

Lots of debate about the graphics cards here:

http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=339036

And the debate rages on over the glossy screen, just as it has with the MacBook Pros, although there you DO have a choice. I chose the matte screen when I bought mine - the reflections and the possibly unrealistic high contrast (which makes any photo editing suspect) were the deciding factors for me. We're considering a 24" iMac for my mom, who in the last 8 months has developed wet macular degeneration. Her vision has deteriorated significantly and she has difficulty reading even large print books. Her old Wallstreet, running OS 9 certainly isn't up to the task at hand (screen technology has come a long way since then!) so we tried enlarging the text from online newspapers on my 24" LCD and she was much more able to read it. Her vision has been stabilized for the time being with treatment and now we're looking for things to make her life a little easier and more enjoyable. She really loves reading, and I haven't been able to persuade her to try audio books. I was all excited about the new iMacs, but am now wondering if the last generation (at a very nice discount, I might add - $1599 CDN for the 24") would be better. Obviously, gaming isn't an issue! Any thoughts? I will try to go and have a look at the new ones sometime soon, but without the option of a live side-by-side comparison, it may be difficult. I'm also going to have to teach my 86-year-old dad something about Macs - he's always avoided my mom's Powerbook (though he's always fascinated by the info we find for him on the net). Could be an interesting fall, teaching two octogenarians the ins and outs of OS X! tongue.gif

Have also scoped out large print keyboards - they do indeed exist, and some are more or less Mac-compatible.

I wonder how many graphics professional use any kind of LCD? I would really be surprised if any used an iMac (new or old). Most have stated that the Apple Store is a good place to look at the screens if you're thinking about using one in an office setting ( lots of overhead lights, very bright surroundings, etc. ). Most homes would not have that 'problem', however. And that suggests that Apple may need to create a special 'home atmosphere' area for iMacs. dntknw.gif

As for large letter keyboards, there are several companies that make stick-on replacements/overlays. We've had great success with normal sized letters on my wife's iBook, the stick-ons have lasted much longer than the several replacement keyboards Apple provided free of charge! Of course, if you want the actual keys to be larger the stick-ons are no solution.

<Large Letters> May need a PS/2 to USB adaptor (I got at least two of 'em)

This is the one I've been most interested in so far, Jim:

http://www.customkeys.com/largeprint.html

As for the graphics card - it's not graphics pros who are whining, but gamers. The graphics card is perfectly adequate for just about anything you'd want to throw at it, EXCEPT games requiring high frame rates etc., which is where it falls down. Graphics pros probably don't use iMacs much because they use MacPros with lots more storage, expandability etc. and also want to choose their own monitors - the iMac monitors, while good, AFAIK, are not comparable to high-end LCD graphics monitors from the likes of Eizo (we're talking serious dollars). Nothing to do with the graphics card. Many pros are now making the switch to LCD - it is no longer the case that CRTs are so much better with color fidelity etc. LCDs have improved greatly over the past few years in particular and they are also readily available in the larger sizes favored by graphic pros. Until my 22" LaCie Electron Blue died on me  just before we moved (convenient!) I'd not made the switch to an LCD, largely because I was concerned about color when editing photos, but had decided that I would soon as things had improved so much. Well, soon became immediately - I'm now using a 24" Dell 2407WFP and like it very much. http://www.anandtech.com/displays/showdoc.aspx?i=2940 It's gotten generally rave reviews, and while it not be up to the standards of the Eizo ColorEdge CE240W, the Eizo, at $1700 is almost three times the price. LaCie and a few others make high-end LCDs aimed at the pro market. It's getting harder to find high-end CRTs for pro use - even LaCie has stopped making them, as has Sony and others.

That's called 'progress'! smile.gif Since I'm not any kind of artist, my old 17" iGloo LCD works fine for me! And I don't do "games" either. I'm probably the very large market Apple is trying to sell iMacs to.
