Hey Paddy: 10.14.5 update & LR6?
« on: July 06, 2019, 02:51:44 PM »
Yesterday, I updated to Mojave 10.14, and fired up LR (owned!)6, and I got a warning that it needed to be "updated", which, of course is not going to happen.  It said that it might not work on further updates.  So, I downloaded the updater for 10.14.5, but have not installed it, and am fishing around for others who use their owned LR, and whether or not it will continue to run if I update.  Any input?  :thanx:

Never mind, Paddy; it works fine, but I did have to download the new driver for my old Wacom Intuos 4, and then do a "security thing" in Preferences to get it to work again.

I still haven't updated to Mojave. :p (yeah - unusual for me, but it's been a busy year and it always fell off the priority list!)

I get a similar message with regard to MS Office 2008 after I installed Mojave 10.14.5  ("will not work with next version of the OS").How concerned should I be, and what should I do?

Thanks

I suspect Word 2008 is a 32bit app. That was the standard back then. Apples next OS will require 64bit apps. Most good developers have already made that change. Even MS has probably already done that with their current apps. Lots of apps have done that in recent years. Apple is simply letting you know to either update an old app or find a replacement before installing Catalina. Honestly, neither my wife nor I have needed Word for several years to read/write Word/Excel/etc. documents. She normally gets those things from her National organizations and returns them with her changes without any problems in their original MS format. :dntknw:

BTW, you can see what apps are still 32bit by using option clicking the Apple menu and selecting “System Information”, then selecting the Software->Applications. You may need to either make the window wider or drag the column dividers to the left.

I have MS Office 2008 in Mojave. I never use Excel or Powerpoint, but I do have use for Word and Entourage. Entourage works but it's a bit temperamental at times. Word also works, but not as well as in previous OS incarnations.

I bit the bullet and subscribed to MS Office 365 because I prefer Word over all the other word processing apps that I have tried, including Pages, Libre Office, and Open Office. I set up Outlook but I have an issue that must be addressed by my ISP before I switch to it, namely that the POP account that Entourage uses has been converted to IMAP in Outlook. It's probably a simple fix but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

I have noticed that Outlook has lost some features that I have in Entourage. It is very easy to add a vcard to Entourage by simply dragging it into the Address field (I create a contact in Contacts and drag it to the desktop to create the vcard). To add the vcard to Outlook, I have to Control-click it and open it with Outlook. Then, I opt to save it and close. In addition, adding an attachment to an email in Entourage is simple; just drag the attachment's icon into the Entourage icon in the dock. This doesn't work in Outlook; I have to click the paper clip icon, navigate to the attachment, and then add it.

I have tried Mail and Thunderbird, but prefer Entourage. Outlook has many similarities to Entourage so the transition is easy. I have read good things about Airmail but haven't tried it yet. I'll probably do it at some point because it's only $10, a sum that I don't mind wasting.

Bottom line: MS Office 2008 won't work after Mojave so we both have to look at alternatives. As Jim pointed out, it's 32-bit and Mojave is the last OS that supports 32-bit apps.

I did not intend to hijack this thread by diverting attention from LR, but I now know why I will need a newer version of MS Office. Other people may have similar issues with other apps. I use Excel and Word extensively but none of the other MS apps. I have tried LibreOffice and it didn't go well, so it appears I will stick with MS. Now I need to decide whether to subscribe to 365 through the AppStore or buy the single-user versions direct from MS. Any recommendations? Thanks!

FWIW, I bought Office 365 directly from MS. I opted for the once-yearly payment rather than monthly because it saves a bit of money. I don't know about App Store.

Your call.

Buying the single license of Office is now very pricey since it only works on ONE computer. No more loading it up on 3 Macs - there is no family option for the perpetual license version (Office Home & Student 2019). They really are trying to push everyone onto the subscription model. If you get Office 365 Home, it works for up to 6 people, for $99 (CDN) a year. Also gives you Mac AND PC versions - so if you need both, you don't have to buy it twice for two different computers. Oh yes...they've made it much more attractive to keep feeding them money year after year. <_< I have Office 2016 on both Macs, and hope that will continue for a while yet.

Well, I did it! Bought and installed MS Office Home & Student 2019. It has only Word and Excel, but that's all I use anyway. If I ever need to run it on my other computer I can start it up from a cloned backup drive.

Excel's new user interface is considerably different from 2008, but I am not too old to learn (just turned 89), and I'll get used to it.

What's happening in the LR world?
