Have you ever noticed the tiny red dot?
« on: January 05, 2022, 11:11:23 AM »
Last week I noticed a very small (tiny!) red dot above the cell power strength bars on my iPhone. Just wondering why it was there.

According to Apple, there is NO red dot where I was seeing it! Apple says it is either orange or green.
So:
  • I'm going color blind :no2:
  • Apple is wrong
  • There is another answer

1. All other colors seem quite normal and my names usually agree with what others use for them, so I don't think my color vision capabilities are changing.
2. Apple is never wrong.
3. I did find one reply to this question noted that 'orange' on a "dark background" can look 'red'. Is "dark background" the same as "Dark Mode"? I have never intentionally selected or allow "Dark Mode" and the normal (default background image) at that spot is a light grey, at least on my Lock Screen. Still looks red to me! :wallbash:

The technical answer is that the 'orange' and 'green' dots are an indication that the phone's microphone is being used. Awakening Siri is an easy way to see the 'orange'/'red' dot. However, 'she' goes back to 'sleep' fairly quickly when I don't speak to her (your milage may very, I'm just not very sociable with Siri). So that doesn't help explain why I was constantly seeing 'red'.

A Restart of the phone seems to have eliminated the dots for the time being. :dntknw:

I see an orange dot on dark and light wallpapers, in both dark appearance and non-dark; but once he (I use a guy's voice) talks to me the dot goes away.  :dntknw:  Until you posted this, I'd never noticed the dot. :p

Works the same way on my iPad, but the dot is slightly larger and slightly oranger (is that a real word?). Frankly, I’ve never actually used Siri (or Sir ie). S/he simply ‘goes away’ in a few seconds. From what I read, I would expect the dot to remain as long as a ‘conversation’ exists.

Does the dot change colors when you actually talk to him? As I understand this behavior, the orange/red dot means Siri (or the app that is using the mic) is ‘listening’ and turns green when it ‘hears’ a ‘voice’. :dntknw: I don’t really know of any apps that use the mic, so I don’t know how the color or visibility of the dot might behave with them.

The orange dot is there while Siri waits for me to speak when I first hold down the "home" button. It's also there while I'm talking. Once Siri replies, the dot disappears. The behavior is the same on iPhone and iPad. I've not seen a green dot.  :dntknw:

I hope this isn't one of those 'just-heard-this-song-and-now-I-can't-get-it-out-of-my-mind' problems!

Take care, down there! I'm being entertained by watching my side neighbor kids running back and forth across our front yard. Schools were canceled because of only a threat of snow! :whistling:
