There is, Highmac, a very effective choice of 6 separate voices available: 3 female, 3 male.

We opted for "Lori", who I have noted with interest, is the same voice TomTom uses in its ads, TV and radio.

Irrespective of the "legend" (or not) of Germanic vocal preferences, the early research in the US re: warning voices in vehicles/aircraft clearly showed better attentlon was being paid to female voices.

Ah, and has it not ever been thus?

That is interesting, as many many years ago, a fight broke out during a softball game which my husband was playing on. He was in the field and this happened around home plate. Everybody was screaming and hitting, it was really awful. And I was the only female on the team, so I ran over and yelled as loud as I possibly could for the guys to stop it. And my goodness, they broke apart and looked at me and did indeed stop. It was a surprise! Perhaps thinking of their mothers, sisters, or a favourite teacher,,,,,,yes it did work. And Ive never thought of that since until this topic.
My husband was impressed at the time and asked me to what I did to stop the fight.

Well, of course I just knew it ....

I noticed the word in the sentence that looked like popcorn so I put "popcorn" and "WC Fields" into Google and it came up.
