I've been getting this error message constantly when trying to clone my hard drive using Apple's Disk Utility from the Mac OS X DVD:
QUOTE
An error (2) occurred while copying. (No such file or directory)

This error is really driving me nuts! I have repaired both the internal Hard Drive and External FireWire Hard Drive. Disk Utility repaired problems on the FireWire drive and then found no problems the second time. No problems were detected on the internal Hard Drive.

After repairing the disk, i tried cloning the internal Hard Drive to the FireWire drive again andn got the same error at about the same time.

No luck when calling AppleCare, and i can't afford to reformat the external FireWire hard drive since i have vital information on the disk from previous backups as well as other information just on the FireWire drive and not the internal drive (since i ran out of room on my 100gb internal hard drive.)

My external FireWire drive is a Maxtor 250gb drive. I have 110gb free on that drive and 85 used on my internal drive in my PowerBook.

Last time i had this problem, i cloned the disk using SuperDuper, however it is not possible to boot off of a Disk image created by SuperDuper, since it mandates that you erase the destination disk or use a Disk Image. I own ProSoft's Data Rescue II program, but that also mandates that your erase the destination disk.

Any help?  sos.gif

You need to use SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Clner to clone your drive, not Disk Utility.

did you NOT read my post!! (and this aggravates me most when people don't read the entire post!!)

I tried using that but it requires you to reformat the partition before you clone!
I cloned successfully using Disk Utility in the past from the same computer to the same hard drive!

SuperDuper and Carbon Copy Cloner do not require you to reformat or re-partition when you clone. Absolutely, positively not. I have used them many, many times.

If you try to use something like CCC and it tells you that you have to reformat, then your problem is simple: You are trying to clone onto a disk that has been formatted for Windows computers, not for Macs. You can not clone Mac OS X onto a Windows partition. It WILL NOT work.

i have also used SuperDuper in the past as well, and have only cloned to a Macintosh formatted hard drive. SuperDuper makes you erase the destination disk.

I have SuperDuper!, bought my license, use it every week to make bootable backups and I have never had to delete anything unless I asked it to in the options. The people that answered you were right because they had assumed you had a registered copy. This seems like your problem right here:

You should read the User's Manual that came with your download... Or like was suggested above, post in the user forum over at Shirt-Pocket if you DO have a registered copy of the software.

Thank you mister kelly, sir! I did find that statement very odd on the have to delete business so I went looking at the User Manual because I couldn't see how this could be true with my SuperDuper! settings set up as they were.

We should all read the User Manual, shouldn't we?  wink.gif

And yes, SuperDuper! is very much worth its price.   smile.gif

Having originally tried out SuperDuper in its free version for a few weeks I recognized the limitation that Parker encountered. I soon realized the value of paying for the app. Many more options are opened up once it is registered. Definitely a good buy.

I'm cheap, what can i say...  doh.gif  oops.gif

Since i have a PowerBook, it's not always connected to a FireWire hard drive; however i am now considering a NAS (Network Attached Storage) drive to backup wirelessly in the house.

Hey Gailwin,

I was having the same error as you restoring iMac I had to replace, which is how I found this board with a Google search for the error.

I had taken an image of the HD with disk utility and wanted to restore it so my replacement iMac was where I left off with the one that ha to go back.

What my problem was, as I think is yours, is that you HD you are restoring your .dmg to share the same name. So YourHD (which is the drive your restoring too) and YourHD.dmg (which is the image).

When the disk image is mounted it is referred to in the Volumes directory (in the Terminal) as YourHD-1 as your actual HD has already taken the name YourHD.

The easiest way to solve the problem is to rename your HD you are restoring too, and everything should be fine. It worked for me...  whew.gif

Hope that helps,

/ Hami
