Where is Bonjour???

Where is Bonjour at on my iMac G5. I see it in one directory, but it is grayed out...can't select it?


Any help will be greatly appreciated. biggrin.gif

On my office network the place I see Bonjour is when I setup a new printer in the Printer Preferences Browser.  Some of the network printers are designated as having a Connection through Bonjour.  I'm running 10.4.6 and I don't recall that I had to "do" anything to get Bonjour installed.  I know there is a downloadable installer for a Windows version of Bonjour but it just seemed to come with OS 10.4.6.  Someone else will surely know more than I but when I look at these printers they seem to be newer printers with Postscript capability.  I'll be interested in a more knowledgable answer myself.

Thanks GUNUG. My lady has a networkable Brother MFC 5440MC. The users guide says to go to the Print Utility screen and add the printer and the next screen says to select Rendezvous (may be changed in future versions of the Mac OSX). I believe Rendezvous was changed to Bonjour. Anyhow it doesn't show up in the dropdown.

Yep, Rendezvous became Bonjour, I'll have to research it.  My recollection was that the computer went out and looked for printers as a part of the system setup; I don't know how to force it to go out and look again.  I think it does "assume" a DHCP server which you may not have; I have a wireless/wired Linksys router at my house that connects the DSL modem to the network and it provides IP addresses via DHCP so I have an assumption that this could allow Bonjour to work.  Here is a link that discusses this that you should be able to reach:

This is not what you'd call a user site as it's pretty technical.  If you have a situation where you're being given an IP address automatically and you have extra capacity on your switch or router then things will probably work.  There "might" be a different way to use that printer more directly if it is an HP PCL or Postscript type printer.

We have an 8840MFC. Not sure if your's is the same, but you can determine the printers default IP address ( or even set ) using the little LCD screen and one of its menus. I'm assuming that it is networked via ethernet, BTW.

Sometimes, it is easier to simply Delete a printer in the Printer Setup panel and then Add it again. Of course, that assumes you can see it...

I think you may also have some Brother software, Brother Control Center? You can tell it how the printer will be connected; USB or Network. That may also help.

Finally, try turning it OFF/ON while the Mac(s) are shut down. Then restart them.

BTW, even if your ISP requires DHCP, you can assign IP addresses to everything on your LAN ( even if that's just the printer and the Mac ). This will prevent getting different addresses every time something gets turned OFF, especially if you have more than one computer on the LAN.

I got the printer IP address from the LCD screen on the printer. I put it in, but it is still not printing. I haven't tried the other suggestions you made yet.

Ah, yes, a minor misteak on my part...

One must also use the Network Pref Panel to change ones choice from DHCP to Manual. You will, of course, need the IP numbers for your ISP to put in the appropriate box. OTOH, this network stuff may have nothing to do with your problem...

Going back a little, do you have anything like "Brother Control Center" software on the Mac's? Our copies are located in HD/Library/Printers/Brother/Utilities/ControlCenter/ControlCenter.app along with several other files/apps that may have become corrupt?

I came across this link in my bookmarks and thought it might be of some use:

It talks about turning on Bonjour "discovery" in the command-line.  I guess that I'm not sure that there will be anything to discover if you're not getting at it from an IP address that the printer sees.  I have accessed networked printers via their IP address in the terminal program or via the browser.  What you get that way would vary with the printer but perhaps it might be something useful.

Well well well...after uploading the Brother software from the CD for the MFC5440CN, and trying the appropriate settings it still doesn't print.
So I do a little detective work by perusing the network users guide. Alas, I find that this particular model printer does not have supporting software for OS X.
Foiled again by a manufacturer that is picky about which models to support.  rant.gif  wallbash.gif
