I got hotter just reading the posts.   dntknw.gif

thanx.gif   for the wonderful cooling picture.  It helps.

I have had my air conditioning on constantly for about three weeks - I hate to get my bill.  They just announced today that they are raising our electric rates (for the third time this year).  Wow, between the high gas prices and the high electricity bills, I will probably be living out on the street - and not to cool off  either!  tears.gif

I do try to wear all cotton as it absorbs the perspiration a lot better - I'll stay away from the synthetics until it cools off.

Usually we have a real nice breeze on our hill, but the air has been very still, even at night (when it used to cool off).

Enough of this - I think I will go sit in the refrigerator for a while to cool off!  yahoo.gif

I don't know about the rest of the U.S., but it's "cool" enough here today to turn off the air conditioning and open the windows. Just got our utility bill, and our usage was down from last year, but the cost was about the same.
Ya gotta applaud those bunnies for sacrificing their hearing just so some guy in Cupertino can have better TV reception.

Our elec bill is way up compared with last year, usage the same, too.

Sad, but true, a neighbour's boxer died of a heart attack last week when it was so hot here.  She was not a young dog, and didnt seem distressed at the time.  But she was outside in the yard with the kids playing, when it happened.  She always had access to the wading pool, and to come indoors, but she just wanted to be out with the children, and it must have been too much.

It is so very important to realize that dogs feel the heat and humidity a lot more than humans, its more difficult for them to cool themselves.  They dont sweat, and panting is not enough if its really hot.  Never let the dog exercise a lot in hot weather.  Always keep at least 2 water dishes nearby, and keep them clean and full.  Add ice several times during the day.  And give the dog a chance to play in the sprinkler, swim, or get wet somehow.  Most of our neighbours have the wading pools for their kids and dogs, and fill them clean daily.
Most of all, if you have AC in the house, let the dog sleep in that room.
Another important consideration, dogs like Boxers or Pugs, with the truncated faces, do have slightly more difficulty breathing, so we must be extra careful with them.
My other neighbour with a white Boxer, lets her play in the hose or the outside shower(on cold) anytime when when the weather is hot.
Jane

edit/add,  Forgot to say, that when its really hot, keep the dog indoors.  I know thats hard when the kids are out and playing, thats where the dog wants to be, but if its cooler in the house and the AC is on, make him stay inside for a while.

Portland yesterday was 106, and some stupid mom left her two sons locked in the car while she went shopping in Target.  What an idiot!

Take them in the store - the store with the a/c running. The store with the water fountain.

I will never, ever understand people who do stuff like this.

All over Oregon night time lows were high enough to bust records. Even here on the coast we stayed warmish. It rained around 8pm, and that trapped in the warmer air. It was muggy, muggy, muggy. My first visit with this and it reminded me of Chicago when I was a kid.

OTOH, the sunset was spectactular as it set behind the incoming fog and clouds. Gotta get a decent digital camera so I can take pics.

What happened to the kids?

Last week in Toronto, a mother and her daughter left the grandmother in the back seat while they went shopping. The temperature inside the car was over 50C, or 122F, when the cops got her out. They arrested the witless bozos when the pair returned to the car.

The two have a laundry list of charges against them, probably including elder abuse, but the grandmother, who apparently recovered in hospital, can't go back home. Officialdom found her some other place to live, but the mother and daughter are fighting to get her back.

I didn't add the car situation to my list, as most people realize to never ever leave humans or dogs in a car, even in just medium weather.

Just Tuesday, I went into a store to report a dog left in a car. Looked out and the woman had come back quickly, all was OK.  She had left the windows down, but still was too hot.

The first thing I did when I moved into this house, a year ago May, was to install an energy efficient furnace and a 14 seer air conditioning unit.

With the rebates for being energy effiecient on both, we payed less for natural gas and air conditioning. I think it was a good investment.

I had heat stoke about 15 years ago and I can't take the heat anymore so when it gets hot I turn on the air.

I do my outside work in the morning, wear shorts and cotton shirts and drink a lot of water.

Years ago we drove cross country.  The lunch routine, as I recall - it has been quite a while - was to walk the dog (whom we all loved) and let him sleep in the light-colored car with all four windows cracked while we went in and had lunch.  Then he got some sort of leftover as we came out.

This was before air conditioning was common in cars.

It worked fine and all involved were happy.

Until we hit Texas.

Texas was where our 2-ply tires melted as we drove.

106 degrees.

We had two flats crossing the state before we gave in to the local garage guys' greater knowledge and bought a whole new set of (4-ply) tires. Plus a spare.

You could see my parents' pain.

But we did not change our lunch routine.

This was before the publicity on this sort of thing.

We left the dog in the car with the windows cracked about one-two inches.

It had always been fine before . . .

When we got back to the car the dog was panting to the degree that I have never seen a living dog pant.

We carried him out and he could not stand – not even enough to drink water.

We got water into him lying down.

You never saw a dog drink so much water in your life.

Eventually he got up and all was well.

He lived many more years.

A close one.

At the time we thought that we were doing everything right.

We really did.

Times change.

Oh - we changed our lunch routine.

Picnics - with the dog joining us on a leash.

Everyone was in this together.

Spot was one hell of a dog.

My old friend.

We grew up together.

Thanks for the memory -

Epaminondas

The 2 boys are apparently okay. They got them out before it was too late. Mom is under arrest.

Epaminondas, I'm glad your story had a happy ending.

Sneakers and I used to walk at night and we always timed it so that the half-way point was the park -- where we knew the time the sprinklers ran (after sunset). We'd unleash our dog and let her get soaked. There were nights I took off my shoes and socks and walked through the sprinklers with her.  tongue.gif

Our daughter-in-law just phoned to check-up on the Olde Folks. It is really boiling on the SF Peninsula this afternoon (are you keeping notes, Kimmer? - I hesitate even to guess the temp in Vacaville right now). Over a 100 in Petaluma!

Our son has crafted a neat response to Marin County being parboiled this pm: take a round trip from San Rafael on the Golden Gate Ferry to downtown San Francisco. Maybe two RTs! If those jet trimarans can't stir up a cool breeze, there ain't one to be had! Wish that alternative was available to you all.

Like many Bay Area residents, we have no home air conditioning other than that regularly provided by Mother Nature, oh, about 351 days of  the year. Our "system" consists of opening the window There really is validity to the comic's comment that "That the coldest winter I ever spent was a July in San Francisco"  Another local used to observe, "You can always tell the tourists on Market Street in July. They're the ones with tee-shirts, shorts, and headcolds.

We don't use the AC either, since our lovely old dog is no longer with us.
She needed it, we deal. I dont like the noise of the thing anyway. (Or the elec bill)

Our grandson's dog(they live just up the street from us) has full AC in their house.

We do have plenty of breeze here on Cape Cod.
And we swim when its hot.  We do have dog-friendly beaches in our town, and the public beaches are open to dogs before 0800 and after 5pm.

Keep cool and swim, and if you can't find a place to swim, have a water fight in your back yard!  That is a lot of fun!

Open windows at night, closed in day, fans, AC only for a couple hours in late aft if in 90's and a trip to county pool or the shore when possible.

A cruise would be a nice way to cool off but this is as close as I have been... smile.gif
