I would have sworn we had some info on this here, but I can't seem to find it...

In preparing to do some optimizing of my main drive, I updated two partitions on an external drive. Used CCC on one, Superdooper on the other. CCC makes a bootable copy automatically, AFAIK; SD has "Make bootable" enabled. So far, so good.

The CCC systems boots up rahter slowly. The SD setup is even slower. Both seem to hang with the "Loading OS X" progress bar completely filled. If one waits long enough, however, a dialog pops up asking for ones "Name" and "Password". Ecstatic with joy that they were both 'bootable', I quickly entered the same info I use on my internal drive/System! smile.gif

Not so fast, 'external booter man'! No matter how carefully I type the info ( or variations of it ), neither dialog can get past the 'jitterbox' stage. Neither will accept my info. Period. dntknw.gif

Jim, Dave Nanian of Shirtpocket wants the poster in his forum with the same problem to send him an email for instructions on how to fix the problem - so whatever it is, it is not unknown!

Guess you'll have to email him too - but can you let us know what he says? Just in case any of us have the same problem in the future...

May be a few other clues in this thread.

(Hope my external works ok...got it with me here in Canada, but haven't tried it yet!) eek2.gif

Paddy's second link may be the answer.  Depending on which script command you used, SuperDuper doesn't guarantee bootability

You really should partition the external into data and backup partitions. That way, you can dedicate one to your bootable backup, and one to your storage needs, and manage both appropriately...


I think he meant "data and boot partitions".
That's how I set up my externals, boot on one partition and files on another. You might try running Permissions on the partitions before considering recloning the drive. Also be sure you don't have the caps lock on. Can't tell you how many times I've done that.

Not sure there is any real difference in creating partitions, mainly in how they are used. I suspect I could have saved some grief by creating much smaller "boot" partitions and allowing much more room for the "backup" ones. Not being a "partitioning guru" I just made 3 basically equal sections on the 250Gig external, figuring I could pretty well copy everything on my 80Gig internal at least twice ( leaving one more partition for my wife's 40Gig laptop drive ).

Anyway, I'll check the links and report back what results, good or bad. I suppose I could start getting older stuff off the external and onto DVD's ( since I still haven't figured out how to make DVD 'shows'! wallbash.gif ). Then I could start over...

I do remember that the SD text mentioned "Copy Newer"...
I also did a Permissions Repair before doing the backup.

What seems strange to me is that, while both partitions will actually boot, they both also want a Name and Password that they don't seem to recognize as mine. So, they will boot, despite the topic tittle...sorry. blush-anim-cl.gif Perhaps one of the links will speak to that...

Oh, I'll take the "caps lock" key cap off the keyboard, just not sure how that affects the problem...harhar.gif

Yep, looks like both CCC and SD have quirks that require carefil reading/following of procedures to assure the Name/Password thing gets copied correctly. I registered at Shirt Pocket forums and will get started on backing up the back ups of the documents on the external...see you in a few days...

It sounds like there may be a work around with this problem, I'll also see how safe that might be...
