Mac wont recognize blank DVD

Hi, I am running a G4 Dual 500, OS 10,4,7, 1.12GB RAM, with a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR103, and Toast 7.1

I work as a paramedic and firefighter, and sometimes I bring my computer in the ambulance at night to watch dvd's when its slow.  However, I hate to bring my real copies (I scrached 4 in the last 2 months), so I decided to rip them using MacTheRipper.

Anyhow, ripping them was ok, but when I try to burn them on Maxell DVD-R 16x 4.7GB SP Mode disks, it sees teh recorder, gives me the Status: Waiting, and simply ejects my disk as if it does not recgnize it as a writeable device.

I even bought Popcorn 2, and it gives me the same woes.

Can anyone help me figure this one out please ?

Try a different brand, or even DVD+R - my iBook is very fussy with no apparent trend but refuses some brands and types and accepts another.  It ialso then changes its mind completely another day and likes the other type it refused previously.

And they said technology would make your life easier!!!

I'm assuming that you need MactheRipper because the DVD's are protected? Otherwise, you can simply use Disk Utility to burn a "cdr" image of the disk. Then you can burn that image onto a blank DVD ( assuming the burner 'sees' it. ).

Bu I agree that s different brand may help. Just get one or two and see if it helps.

The Pioneer DVD-RW DVR103 was originally designed for 2X DVD-R media, it may also work w/ 4X DVD-Rs' but I don't think you will get it to burn 16x disks.

I may be totally off base here, but my understanding is that any "speed" listed on the disk is the maximum speed at which it can be burned. Of course, newer burners should be able to detect that max speed of newer disks. All/any should be capable of being burned at slower speeds. However, different color dye on newer technology disks makes them harder to use in old technology burners whcih may not have compatibly colored lasers, at least that was a problem with 'old fashioned' CDs!

This may sound silly but have you tried not putting the disc in until Toast asks for it?
With my burner if I put the disc in before asking the software to start the burn it will eject the disc as if there was something wrong with it. If I then reinsert the disc into the drive it will merrily go ahead and let me choose the setup for the burn, etc.

Just thought this might be your situation.

What Bill said.  

You should replace it with a newer one that will burn 16x.

You don't always need the fastest
actually, you get a "better burn" at a slower speed

when i burn cd's for my band
i always burn them in about 8x when i could be burning in 24x and get more done quicker


i'm having the opposite problem with my DVD's
my computer will burn fine, but won't read.
