OT, a really close call!
« on: September 06, 2006, 04:18:11 PM »
Had quite a scare this morning, on the southbound part of our highway going into the nearest town(to shop), we saw an elderly couple do a U turn in front of us after coming onto the highway up from the exit ramp, and start up the wrong way coming towards oncoming traffic!  My husband flashed the lights, stopped and blocked both southbound lanes, all the traffic stopped behind us, and I leaned way out the rightside window waving my arms and pointing towards the exit.  Finally they stopped, crossed the highway and went back down the exit.  Whew, that was a scary thing.

Then later on in town, at a red light, a stupid guy yakking on his phone, made a right turn and deposited a great big bag of Dunkin Donut muffins in the middle of the intersection.  Everybody tooted and yelled, but he was so absorbed in his phone call, that he never even turned his head.
That was enough for one day.

Don't you love it? wink.gif

We see lots of tourists watching the ocean as they drive and weaving all over the place. Eventually they simply stop in the middle of Hwy. 101 and gawk, and sometimes a passenger will get out, snap a few photos and then they are on their way smiling and laughing.

I'm glad you weren't hurt.

I had the same thing happen to me a year or so ago at the Lecompton exit of the Kansas Turnpike.  The older lady driving was oblivious to my honks and waves and I suspect the man with her didn't notice either.  She stopped at the toll booth going the wrong way and was face to face with a large delivery van.  I wish I could've heard the conversation she had with the man in the tollbooth!

They probably wanted a refund!

Now that is stoopid! The least he could have done is deposit them on the side of the road! An intersection is just not a safe place to eat! Still, some one should send him a 'Thank You' card for the muffins...

She was probably trailing him from Duncan Donuts! Or, that intersection isn't as busy as she wants us to think... Thinking.gif

The muffins flew out all over the place and the Dunkin Donuts bag was flapping helplessly.
I did want to stop,,,,,,,,but my husband said no.  He was yelling and pointing at the guy in the car.
Interetingly enuf, when we came back thru there,, somebody had collected the bag, most of the muffins, but the remainder were squished.

Years ago we saw a milk carrying truck on the Maine Turnpike spill its contents,,,,,
That was funny, at least our kids thought so.

Out here is "crazy" southern California, I saw a man drop a sofa off of his truck on a freeway - he just kept going.  Fortunately no one was hurt, but what a scare for a few minutes as everyone scattered to miss it.  rant.gif

One time about 15 years ago I was driving on a freeway when a rubber door mat blew from somewhere and landed on my front windshield - now that was scary!  sweatingbullets.gif I finally got over to the side of the road and removed it, praying all the way.

Long ago this happened to us going down the exit onto RT 128 Boston, a heavily travelled road.  Truck about 500 yards in front of us lost about 25 cement blocks!
We lost 2 tires and were able to limp to the side.  The car beside us(newlyweds) had a block go thru their radiator, and the couple on the other side of us lost their front axle.  About 10 cars were damaged.
The truck pulled over, and I ran down the highway side and took a picture of him.  He looked like he was about to take off, but when he saw me and the camera, he got out of the cab.  He knew he had created a real mess.  But thank god nobody got hurt.  Being before the day of cell phones, it took a long while for the cops to arrive.
Scary, but lucky.

My father-in-law had a scare once as he was driving along (at a low speed, in town) and one of the lenses in his glasses fell out. Being blind in both eyes without his specs, this was not good. He managed to pull off the street and, with his handy jeweler's screwdriver, make the repair. Since that time, I've made sure to have one of those in the glove box of the car I drive.
