OT: Anyone have an opinion about a Canon ZR-600?
« on: September 07, 2006, 06:42:16 PM »
I'm thinking of getting a small camcorder/camera for my college son (part of the price of a kid in college) and was wondering if anyone has bought a Canon ZR-600 or tried one.  I see it as cheap as $259 at Butterfly Photo (whoever they are):

I like this over the cheaper ZR-500 because it has a SD slot and can save stills and video to it!  Any thoughts anyone?

I don't know about the ZR-600 but I would be wary about doing business with any electronics store that has a Brooklyn address. Thinking.gif

You can read some customer reviews of Butterly Camera here.

PS I see tht Dell has the ZR-600 Mini DV Camcorder for $279.20 here.

Brooklyn has certainly fallen in everyone's estimate!

Walt moved out to Long Island and liked it so much that he decided to build his mall here. toothgrin.gif

I would get the ZR700 as I think it is more recent than the 600 and has been tweaked abit.

Good luck - I will be very interested in what you think as I am thinking about buying a camcorder and am just doing my homework.

Bill - Is there a store at Walt's mall where I can buy a Canon ZR-600?  smile.gif

Frances - I'm going to have to figure out the differences between the 600 and 700 (I know the 500 doesn't have a SD-Card slot to take stills onto) before I would decide on one or the other!

I notice that Abe's of Maine (presumably not in Brooklyn) has a good price on the ZR-700; has anyone dealt with them?

Abe's of Maine (now in Brooklyn, wink.gif ) is a reputable dealer. My personal favorite B&H is in NYC. Both can be checked at BizRate

One note: if you're looking for a camera that will be used a lot for stills, rather than video, you're far, far better to get a digital still camera. There are lots of inexpensive point and shoot models out there and most will offer far superior photos to the video camera. (Just wondering if he really needs a video camera - since you'll get much better value for price in a still camera if that's really what he needs...)

Paddy - The kid (in journalism school now) already has a little Olympus Still Digital; this is mainly so he can have a source of videos that he can edit to ramp up his skills.  My old camcorder is VHS-C so it's kind of hard to get things out of it.  If I can find one I like enough maybe I'll buy two!   coolio.gif

A good place to look for electronics is www.dealmac.com .

Of course it's got "mac deals" but they also have cameras, RAM, even PCees.

You can search for specific items as well as by type/catagory.

I saw a JVC GR-D370US MiniDV Camcorder for $270.

There's also a forum that discusses these things as well as Mac stuff.

Kinda like Techsurvivors and Bizate combined.

PS. I picked up a Cannon A620 for $178.
