ANOTHER UPDATE: Tiger on my G4?
« on: September 08, 2006, 10:41:12 PM »
Last night at our user group meeting, we were supposed to see a preview of Leopard, but the presenter was sick - so we had Q&A instead. Other than the lady who always asks about every feature "Will it work with gmail?", and they all say, "What's gmail?" - it was interesting.  rolleyes.gif

The most interesting part was the widget stuff. Bunches of local widgets that are pretty cool and I was intrigued enough to search out Tiger. Best I found was $89 at OWC.

I'm pretty sure I can run tiger on my *mac*:

PowerPC G4
933 MHz
2MB L3 cache

1.5 GB SDRAM

TONS of space on my 2 hds.

Before I blow $89, I'm would like confirmation that I *can* run it without being bogged down, and does anyone know of a better price?

Thanks!
kimmer

Absolutely. Runs nicely on our 933, and it also runs very well on my old Sawtooth (400Mhz, upgraded with Sonnet 1GHz processor) that my sister now owns. Go for it! biggrin.gif

I'm running TIger just fine on two G4/AGP/400MHz; it runs a lot better with all the non-English language stuff stripped out!

My old 350 megahertz G3 blue-and-white that I handed down four years ago is happily (if slowishly) running Tiger, but it's faster than when it ran Panther. I'm about to get the machine back — with three times as much RAM and a new drive!

Should run fine, but you really don't need all the unused languages nor the printer drivers for the 478 printers you don't own.

D73, you will love the RAM and the new drive!

If I had dumped all the printer drivers, then I'd have been in a fix when we changed printers. wink.gif  Paranoia rules.  rofl.gif

I'm still running Jaguar on the old B&W G3; it works about twice as fast with an internal SCSI drive instead of running the OS off the IDE.  I think that the IDE on those old guys is running at 2/3 of the speed on the G4's and the drives were generally 5400rpm instead of 7200rpm!

Ordered. Waiting its arrival.

Figured for a few bucks more I'd have the full install and not have to install jag/panther/tiger and all their updates. wink.gif

B&W G3 with a G4 550 MHz processor.  It is now running at 600 MHz and Tiger fine.  Family actually loves it!

A video card may help some as well.  Not sure what shipped with your G4, but, installing a Radeon 7000 in the B&W helped.

Plus, I have a MDD with a single processor 1.25 GHz G4 and a Gigabit Ethernet G4 with a PowerLogix dual processor 1.2 GHz processor upgrade, both running Tiger absolutely!  There's a Radeon 9000 that came with my MDD that I installed in the Gigabit and a Radeon 9600 Pro was installed in the MDD.

You all have answered my questions that I was about to ask.
My older G4 Tower should run Tiger just fine.  Its got 9.2.2. now

Do you have to install Panther first?  Or can I just use the Tiger disk that came with my iMac G5 refurb(Panther was on it when I got it, they included Tiger disk free).

Remind me how to get rid of all the unused language and printer driver stuff?

Thank you,
Jane

"The Tiger Disk from your iMac G5 will not work on that unit. Apple conscripts the installers to look for specific Machine cues if it is the Media included with a Machine."

This is what a friend just emailed to me about installing Tiger on my old G4 tower.
I am not sure what he means?
I thought if you all have Tiger on your older machines, that I would be able to install it also from the Tiger disk?
Thanks again,  I am a bit confused with what he said.
