Doing battle with a pavilion 782c
« on: October 16, 2006, 08:12:45 PM »
Nice machine, all the buttons and knobs including firewire but it’s a dead duck today.

The LED on the Power supply lights up, but the LED in the start button does not, leading me to believe that a loose something or other is upon me or…… the motherboard is toast.

I’ve gone through all the HP motions and I’m about to pull and push everything I can inside the box, in case it’s a loose goose, but I’m not optimistic at this point.

Is there any magic out there that would isolate the reason why power is not getting past the Power Supply Module? Perhaps deeper than, say, a bad button?

One would think that an LED on the PS would be to indicate it was working properly. OTOH, it is a PC. wallbash.gif However, if you can disconnect the cable going from the PS to the motherboard, you should be able to use a simple volt meter to check the volatge and polarity on its pins. That might at least show the PS is OK. Thinking.gif

As for the excess Goggle results, you might try adding "HP" "no power" "power light" etc. to the search criteria and get fewer but more meaningful results. dntknw.gif

Of course, there must be a dozen or so computer shops around your area that can quickly and with a small fee determine that you need to buy a new box from them! harhar.gif

I did pull the 6 post plug from the motherboard after my inquiry, tested both red+black post for continuity and ground. Tested the contacts to the button on and off worked. What I haven't had time to figure out is the other sets (2) of wires from the button to the MB. yellow&black green&black from the button to seperate posts on the MB plug cluster.  coolio.gif  dntknw.gif

Schematics would be helpful...

You might even get any computer shop to check the volatges for all the outputs. They might also check how 'pure' the voltage is, if some of the caps in the PS have busted, there may be other circuitry on the MB that prevents using the power. dntknw.gif

It may be a while until i get back to it, I did inspeact the MB for swollen Transitors but I didn't notice any. I also pulled the battery (about the sizeof a quarter) and checked it, which was fine as well. I've searched for schematics on HP site but came up empty. Sure I could outsource it, I could give it to a friend to check out, but I thought I'd run it by here first just in case someone had an idea that slipped by me.
I'll call Buddha if I'm over my head, he should have something to contribute, but until then I'm enjoying the adventure! I've never opened a PC before this, it's always been software issues for me. wink.gif
