In this BBC article we have the man who lead the development of Word and Excel, Hungarian born Charles Simonyi ready to become the first nerd in space next March aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft.  This is a blow to myself and XABD amongst others who were hoping it might be us!

Wait a minute! Those astronauts are engineering graduates! I'm sure there's been a pocket protector or two in space already! biggrin.gif
Ya gotta applaud those bunnies for sacrificing their hearing just so some guy in Cupertino can have better TV reception.

I think there was a pocket protector velcroed onto the side of Voyager right on top of the plaque:

I don't think I want to visit the Lab after a Microsoft 'engineer' had visited! Too many chances of the BSoD! eek2.gif Not a subject one likes to discuss that far from terra firma...

I'm not sure they have good enough computers up there to run Windows XP or MAC OS!  Maybe someone else here knows!

They used computers comparable to a cash register when they went to the moon, so they probably stick with what works. (How tough can it be to "lead" the moon, using a telephoto lens hooked up to a periscope inside the cabin? Especially when the moon sticks to the same old circle, year in and year out. A space station would be even easier.)

I couldda bin a rocket scientist.
