. . . Next week's matchups: . . . Ohio State @ Illinois, Champaign, Ill.

When the Bucks play the Illini in Champaign, Dolphin, there no shortage of special meaning roundabout these parts. In the '50s, that game was usuually scheduled as the 3d or 4th contest of the season (which didn't start in late August!).

In a beautiful October of 1954, Lillian and I drove from Columbus to my home in downstate Illinois and on Saturday we attended the game (which Ohio State and "Hopalong" Cassidy and the gallant lads in Scarlet and Gray won handily – sorry, Gregg).   cheer.gif

Then, it was back to Bloomington for a party that evening hosted by my parents to celebrate our engagement. Since most of the guests at that party were U of I grads, Lil and I took some pains to focus our enthusiasm on what was going to happen in December in Columbus, rather than what had transpired earlier that afternoon in Champaign.  Devilish2.gif

It's always made that game (especially when it's played in Champaign) the stimulus for an abundance of happy memories, just like it's doing right about now!   eusa_dance.gif

Another one that slipped out of our grasp. That's three in a row!

So glad the schedule is kind to us. rolleyes.gif

Dick, I can certainly imagine your's and your Lil's joy at the outcome; and understandably also imagine your frustration afterward's about having to keep it pretty much to yourselves. Oh MY!!! I don't think I could have done it.

Michigan State coach John L. Smith fired, but will coach MSU's last three games.

Gregg, I've been doing a bit of studying and your Illini  have been improving! It could be a good game.

Dick, I agree. Let the man finish the season and then can him if that is the university's desire. I see negative motivation here!

WGN is reporting Smith will be fired at the end of the season. I think he will still be on the sideline calling the shots this week.

Yes, the Illini are improving, but not enough to make a game out of this weekend's affair.
