Sound Editor Amadeus Pro 1 On Sale 1/16/07 ONLY
« on: January 16, 2007, 02:18:14 PM »
MacUpdate is offering a $24.95 promo price on Amadeus Pro 1 today only (1/16/07.)

Amadeus Pro 1 is a powerful yet easy-to-use sound editor.  It is particularly useful for transferring old analog recordings to digital formats or creating groovy "mix-tapes" with cross-fades, sound effects, etc.

It's closest shareware competitor is "Sound Studio" which costs $79.95.  Commercial sound editing apps can cost hundreds of dollars.  Audacity is a free-open-source sound editor, but support is minimal at best and learning how the software works requires some dedication on the part of the user... But Hey, it is free!

Check out VersionTracker for reviews of both Amadeus Pro 1 and Sound Studio.  And here is a short review of Amadeus II (10.3.9 and earlier), the previous version of Amadeus Pro 1 (10.4 required), which sports improvements and Universal Binary code.  Amadeus II is still available for $25 here.

It's time to finallly fix the quicky compilation CD that I made for my wife's birthday last year...

I hope you're getting a kickback on this sale! smile.gif

The comparison review is a little dated, not sure what version of Sound Studio he had, but it converts files to MP3s just fine and the "Split by Markers" is invaluable for my usage. I never paid $80 for SS and all the upgrades have been free, but I'm a sucker for <$25 software and I'll give Amadeus a fair shake. Anything that is easy for a non-computer literate user is better.

My only real concern is that the MacUpdate order page seems to be unsecure. I went ahead, against my better judgment and used my credit card based solely on the knowledge that you would reimburse me of any fraudulent charges on my card. Thanks for that reassurance! tongue.gif

The lack of security at the MacUpdate site seems to not have been used by any thieves, yet!

I used Amadeous last night to record the service and immediately noticed differences that may cause me to revert to SS:
1. Probably to save cpu usage, the waveform does not display, much less update in real time. That makes it difficult to monitor the levels using the waveform height as it scrolls by.
2. There is also no 'sticky peak' reading indication of the sound level. This shows the highest volume input until it is exceeded or one clears the memory. Again, this is extremely helpful during live recording so that one can reduce the input levels as needed.
3. While two waveforms are displayed, they are not individually editable as shown. One must first use a "Split" function to separate the left/right inputs. SS shows both tracks similarly but clicking in the upper/lower half of the lower/upper track selects only that one track by default; things are already 'split', so to speak.
4. Saving/Opening/converting seems slightly longer than in SS.
5. When saving to a different format, there is no indication of what the size of the file will be. SS shows a very accurate estimate right in the Save dialog, updating with each quality change selected. Very handy when deciding how large a file to create depending on space limitations/availability at your host.

One very nice feature that I wish SS had is a GarageBand-like track volume indication and controller. It's a horizontal line that can have 'points' added to it which can then be moved vertically to indicate the volume along the linear track; the higher the line, the higher its volume and vice versa. This makes setting the volume extremely easy and almost infinitely variable. The only advantage that GarageBand has is that it can be done automatically there. Manual is fine for me and that's what I do even in GarageBand, anyway. In SS, one has no easily visible indication of the track volume except the height of the waveform and it is difficult to set using the "Fade In/Out" dialogs.

There are still functions I haven't figured out yet. Both programs do similar things, but with different menus and commands. Since I'm used to SS, I'll not down rate Amadeous just because it's different. Just don't know how long it might take this 'old dog' to learn a 'new way'! blush-anim-cl.gif

And one certainly can't complain about the price, even without the onetime discount! smile.gif

My needs are very modest... I basically only need to be able to do cross-fades between songs, the kind of thing I did when I was a DJ Way Back in the 70s.

Cross fades would be easy with Amadeous, thanks to the volume lines ( ala GarageBand ). But I find the use of a default ( and apparently unchangeable ) format of its files ( ".amad" ) to be frustrating, also. I think all my other apps, which can save files in various formats, can be set to a specific one or at least 'remember' what I used last time. Since .aif(f) is so common/standard, I dislike having to specify that with each new save.

Still, there is potential for improving that, I may write the developer or check the forums, he probably has already heard abut that minor problem, anyway. And, if I didn't already have SS, I'd probably stick with Amadeous.

From what I have read the Amadeus developer is very responsive to feedback, so I encourage you to drop him a line.
