I'm pretty sure I've seen one (before Christmas) at $99 and I'm not sure it was either on of these!  I don't think it had MAC drivers though!

These gadgets may make it easier, but it's possible using last century technology also. If you want to connect some cables...
Ya gotta applaud those bunnies for sacrificing their hearing just so some guy in Cupertino can have better TV reception.

I read through the users' opinions on these last week and most were pleased but there were some caveats from Mac users about the included software. I have a feeling though some of them were just not very savy as they complained about Audacity which I've used without problem.

The other potential difficulty they expressed was the fact that you had to assemble and adjust the belt on these turntables by hand and it wasn't always accurate or easy. Still I guess they have their place if you don't have any alternative.

I just bought an iMic and attached it to the existing turntable.  Worked a treat with Sound Studio et voila, my record collection on iPod!

A friend just bought one (had it built) that looks like an antique radio am/fm and a turntable that converts his 78rpm records into a number of audio file types. Nice piece of furniture from a Main Street shop in his town.  smile.gif

Hi Frances,
Ive got a good turntable and an iMic, but havent done this yet.
What software would I need?  I would rather import the records into iTunes library rather than put them directly onto the iPod first.
This sounds a lot easier than it used to be.
How would I go about this?
Thank you in advance, Ive got some neighbours who want to do this, they could come over here and I could help them, weve all got Macs.

Well, if I remember correctly.  I got Sound Studio - my version was free (can't remember where I got it from but I can send it to you if you want a copy).

Rigged up iMic with output leads from amplifier to iMic microphone, then other USB lead into computer.

Went into Sound Studio and changed input window to read from iMic (highlight the iMic in menu).

Had a test run for sound levels - trying not to let it go above red line too much.

Happy with test, put everything back to beginning.  Press record on Sound Studio, put needle down on record and wallop, it records the lp!

When record stops, press stop on Sound Studio.  Wait for it to load up all it recorded.  Save iT!!!  I usually save it to desktop and then I know where the file is.

Then take out the beginning silence when you were fiddling about putting the needle in the right place (you put a marker where you want it to start, double click on the stuff you want out, it turns black and hit delete).  Take out the end when you forgot about it and were answering the phone (same method). SAVE.

Then when you are happy with everything, drag and drop to iTunes.  It will save as an AIFF file. You can compress it but you lose something if you do that, IMHO!

GOod luck.  If I can help, email me and I will do my best.  I have not done this for a while, so there may be bits I missed.

Hi Frances,
This is great!  Ive copied your instructions, and I think that we can go from there OK.
The main reason that I need to do this, is Ive got a musician friend who lives in NY city, and he needs my complete Ray Charles collection including the old 78s.
And friends want to copy some of my huge old Blues collection.  Lots of the stuff I have is not available on any music service nor CDs.

So this is a great start.  Then after Ive recorded a lot of this I might just think of getting rid of my huge volume of vinyl, it does indeed take up a lot of space for storage.
I would put it mostly on CDs before I got rid of it though.
I took my old aunt's classical collection(truckload!) of 33s to the town swap shop, and was almost knocked over by the people grabbing the albums!
Thank you for the instructions, and when my NY friend gets here in June, if I need help I will contact you.
Jane

Best of luck.  Any problems, as I say, give me an email.

Just remember to let the recording show itself in the timeline once you have pressed Stop Recording.  THEN SAVE IT!  I found that if you just hit SAVE after Stop recording, you got the spinning beachball of death and the whole machine could not cope, froze and lost the file!  Which meant you had to re-boot and start the whole process again.

Have fun!

Sound Studio is a good app with lots of features but I had some trouble with it occasionally. I believe you can download and use it for free a certain number of times so you can evaluate it on your machine.

If you want to try another recording app, try Audacity. It's totally free and will do the basics pretty well. I recorded many of my LPs with it and cut CDs with the tracks. Also can use the mp3s on the iPod, of course.

Great!  Thanks,  I will save this info also, and when my NY friend gets here in June, we will go to work.
