Viewing WMV in another ap
« on: January 28, 2007, 02:00:40 PM »
I have on my computer:
  • WMV 9.0
  • Quicktime Player 7.1.3
  • VLC
I may have other things that will play vid's - not really sure. wink.gif

Most news sites use WMV, yet I keep bumping into "You need WMV 9.0 to view this. Download it here or watch the ugly version of this news story." Since I have WMV 9.0, I wind up watching the ugly version. wink.gif

Is it possible to watch WMV in either QT or VLC? If so, how do I set up FF and Safari and my Mac to do this?

Thanks!

Flip4Mac appears to work seamlessly on my G5 - videos just play in Quicktime (7.1.3).

I've had the same problem for quite sometime. I have WMP 9.0 , but when clicking on news media or other media...it would alsways say download here first. I hated that.

This is a GREAT little player...works just fine...love it. biggrin.gif

Thanks for the link Kelly!!!

Flip4Mac works grand if the .wmv is on my hd, but web sites are still trying to play things via WMV. How do I get my browsers to use the Flip4Mac?

That is sometimes the hardest part.

In FF ( later versions, anyway ), open Prefs. Look for "Content" as a tab or icon. Hopefully, near the bottom of the window will be a "File Types" area with a button labeled "Configure" or "Manage". Clicking that button will show you a list of file types that it already knows how to handle. You can edit what FF uses for each file type; you'll be asked how to handle it, usually with a normal nav window where you select an app to handle that file.

Of course, you can also remove that type from the list. If you do that, the next time the browser sees that kind of file, it should ask you what to do with it; save to disk, ignore, call the National Guard or just ignore it. You will now have another opportunity to assign an app/plugin to handle the file.

Not really sure how other browsers do this task but I would think in similar ways but perhaps with different terms.

Now there's the rub ... I can't remove what isn't in that list. wink.gif LOL!  Oh well ... I'll keep plugging away, so to speak.

True, and that's been one of my frustrations, also. There seems to be no way to preemptively create a file type in FF prefs. wallbash.gif

I haven't tried, but it may be possible to remove certain plugins from FF resource list and see what happens. eek2.gif Let us know how that works when you can again get to TS! tongue.gif

wallbash.gif I was about to type "have that and it's apparently not working", but a quick search of my hd shows it's GONE! *Poof!* Vanished! Even better -- it's disappeared from my old drive as well! jawdrop.gif

Thanks for the reminder, krissel, cuz I wouldn't have even thought about "where" this was.
