.mac email not working
« on: January 31, 2007, 09:03:39 PM »
I use my .mac email a lot, as it never seems to get blocked as spam and it has always worked very well.
But just in the last week several people and relatives have said that my mail gets sent back to them as undeliverable.

I wonder what is going on with .mac.
So I am switching over to my jcarter.net email which works just fine, or my old original Earthlink one, the capecod.net one.

Whats up with .mac?  I do like their old system with the storage, albums, sites, and the email?
Any ideas?
Thanks,

There are plenty of mysteries about e-mail I'll probably never understand, but I'm guessing that "your" problem is actually the problem of your friends' respective ISPs which somehow may be determining that something is amiss - whether that's true or not.

I receive repeated frequent "bounces" of messages I dispatch to MamaMoose (even though he tells me that perhaps half the time the message is actually received).

I was told some time ago, when bounces were more frequent with some correspondents, that was because other ISPs had mine (then, PacBell) listed as too tolerant of spammers. In any event I had no control over any of that.

The 2 people who recently had my .mac mail undeliverable yesterday morning were AOL and gmail.
So I switched over to my jcarter.net and there is no problem there, so you probably have it figured out.
I can use any of several, so will switch whenever need be.
Thanks for the explanation,
Jane

You can go to your .Mac account and sometimes see a report of past problems ( ".Mac email was down for xx minutes on mon/day/year." ). Sometimes some ISPs don't make very long attempts to resend messages and they may report a bounce much more often than those who are more persistent.

When your friends get a bounce, have them send you the bounce message, then post it here. The bounce message should contain an error code and message, and an explanation of what the error message means.

[Emphasis mine.]

IMO, it's not clear why the msg was considered SPAM...

I hope you don't mind, Jane, I took the liberty of erasing your email address from your post. You really should not post that in a public forum such as TS, anyway.

The error code should be near the top of any report you get. Usually a 500 - 599 number, usually also posted in plain text for human consumption. Here is a <short list > of number codes and their meaning. I think each server admin can specify almost anything they want for any numbers in the range.

And, as you can see, the decision is made by the recipients server, anyway. Not much you can do about it.

Thank you!  Thats the first time that any of my .mac messages were ever considered spam.
Strange, I wonder why?
I am using another email to send to Ellie now anyway, and they all get thru fine.
My cousin using AOL also had it returned.
