Corrupted Desktop File
« on: February 11, 2003, 09:28:00 PM »
A couple of days ago I installed HP software for the Officejet 6110. I've been having trouble ever since. Menus drop down then freeze. Have to rebuild desktop. I suspect the problem is with HP communication app. Anyone else have trouble with HP software. HP told me not to run conflict catcher but I'm not sure why. HELP

Are you running X?
There was an ongoing discussion of HP communications app causing slowdowns and other problems with X. Some of the talk is  on this page.

HP did post an applescript on their site to kill the communication app and restart it when needed until Apple came up with a solution.  Supposedly the update to 10.2.3 overcame this particular problem. This may have nothing to do with your problem, then again...

I'm running 9.1, but I seem to be having the same problems that X people are having. I cant find that applescript on HP site, but I know I saw it the other day.

Would it help to trash your Finder Preferences? Maybe that's not the long term solution, but if they are corrupt, it might help for a little while. If you're not supposed to use CC, no big deal. You can do your own conflict test. Does it happen with extensions off? (Or do you need an extension or two to run the offending program? Start up with just the bare minimum.) Good luck on finding the permanent fix.
Ya gotta applaud those bunnies for sacrificing their hearing just so some guy in Cupertino can have better TV reception.

Saying not to use Conflict Catcher nakes no sense.

It's just turning Extensions off and on.

Is it the latest version 6.0.5?

6.0.5

Did the earlier Drivers work ok?

I think 6.05 is the latest driver. I'm back to using 6.04, but it's just as bad. I've taken the HP Comm. app. out of the startup folder and my problems have stopped. I belive HP Comm. app is only used for scanning. HP tells me they dont believe HP comm. can corrupt the desktop file, I think it does a lot of things they dont believe it can do. I wish I could find a applescript that runs in OS 9.1 that would turn it off and on. (like the one they have for OSX).
