Yes, I know, some of you hate MS Word. But I use it. And Excel. But definitely NOT IE!

Yes, MS Word is bloatware, no doubt about it!

I am currently using Office X on my Macs. My question directly relates to Word.

How do you delete some of the fonts you don't use when you show fonts?

There are a number of Asian fonts toward the bottom that I will never use. And some other esoteric ones that I also will not use.

How can I eliminate these to speed up the font listing?

Also, the list appears double spaced which slows down the display of choices. Any way to change that?

Jack, you can go to >applications> font book> turn off the ones you don't want.
I have Font Reserve left over from my OS9 days, which is an expencive management solution and really not needed any more.

Jack, please be very careful re deleting fonts, even Asian ones. Several of these, as well as other seemingly unneeded fonts, are actually required in order for Word to run correctly:

Where the Office applications (only) are concerned ... do not disable these fonts:

Arial
Batang
Gulim
Hiragino Kaku Gothic Pro W3
Lucida Grande
MS PMincho
MS Gothic
MS Mincho
MS Pgothic
MT Extra
PmingLiu
Simsun
Symbol
Times New Roman
Verdana

Do the Office 2004 rules also apply to Office X?

In the Appendix of the reference article are listed a lot more fonts installed by Office 2004 than I have in my MS Office X fonts folder. And I thought I was having a problem with too many fonts!

And Sandy, if I do use Font Book to turn off some of these fonts mentioned in the article Harv referred to, do I run afoul of Tiger?

I am not certain Jack, but it's my guess that they do, especially as Office X and Office 2004 are so similar, at least from a Word perspective. And, I presume the underlying concept is the same, ergo, 'tis probably best to leave those fonts alone.

Still, if you must, I recommend you use Font Book to disable the fonts rather than physically deleting them. That way, should you later find they are wanted, they can easily be (re)enabled.

AFAIK, mucking about with fonts can lead to disaster, unless you really-really know what you're doing (I don't, thus my conservative approach).

OTOH, it affords one the opportunity to learn about Kernel Panics, assorted Office chaos, recovering lost data, and reinstalling/custom installing Office & fonts.

Please be careful, or at least have a verified backup before you venture forth.

Jack, I run OS 10.3.9 and Word 11.3 I have the foreign fonts shut off leaving me with 204 font choices in FontBook.

Sorry I don't know how to link here, but there's an article at Apple Discussions (#607630) that gives definitive guidelines on font management for Panther and for Tiger. There's even a special section on Word fonts.

I followed these guidelines, and have not had a single problem with fonts. (I've got hundreds!)
