One for the CEO's of this board
« on: May 06, 2007, 04:11:48 AM »
Hey Boardmembers smile.gif

Just a thought I have been having for a while...
When I post a new topic or reply, I have to wait a while before the page loads.
This is not only due to my slow speed here (although I should have 8Mb, but that's another problem), but also cause of the smilies that take some time to load.
And once the page is loaded, typing in a topic/reply goes pretty slow.

I really love those smilies (but where is my and Smiley's cute worldhug/kiss? tongue.gif) but I was thinking that it might be possible to put less Smilies open on the page?
There's still the popup we can use to choose the Smilies.
We can always start a topic on what Smilies are most choosen wink.gif

Well.... it's just an idea.
I am used of the loading times and stuff so it's not that I can't live with it.
Just something I wanted to note, maybe others have this slow-down problem to?
I guess this computer is not that new anymore anyway... (((sigh)))

And about that worldhug/kiss smiley.... can someone (Krissel?) please send it to me?
As I really loved it, I might search for the topic again.

Do you have the "Fastreply" button available? If you do, why not use it, instead of the 'full' reply page? You probably already know most of the styling 'tags' for bold, italic, centering, coloring, sizing. They are all just the word with square brackets on either side of the 'opening' tag and a "/" added to the closing 'tag'. The smilies are also available by simply typing in their 'code'. It's usually a fairly obvious word with colons on each ( ":" ) end. Even a hunt & peck typist like me can enter these 'codes/tags' pretty quickly. But you can also create a 'macro' in one off those text insertion apps like Typinator to do all the work for you.

The point is, you don't have to have a slow loading page to be able to access all the smilies and styling stuff. smile.gif [ <- entered with a ":" and  a ")" ]

I'd campaign for more smiley's (like a Darth Vader smiley for when I want to refer to Bill Gates and his evil empire); of course I have broadband!   smile.gif

Hmmm... Didn't ever used the "fast Reply" one... didn't even really noticed it there tongue.gif
But yes, it's a faster way of doing it and yup, I do know most of the coding, I don't even use the "url" and "img" buttons most of the time, I do it by hand.

Don't get me wrong here... I DO LOVE the smilies... and the more of them the better.
My point was just that there are lots of smilies visable when you open the Reply window, and maybe that could be reduced (When you click "Show All" they all come up in a scrollable window anyway).

Sooo... yes, I love them but they are slowing down my replies abit... nothing to worry to much about though blush-anim-cl.gif

It's like a restaurant menu; if there are too many good choices, I don't know what to order. I'm sure there are smilies that would be a "good fit" for a message, but I don't know them... and if I'm in FAST Reply, I don't want to take the time to look at the whole list. So, I make up my own, which just stay text, of course. :ohwell:

Marcel, I didn't put that smilie in the main list because it was only applicable to you. Glad you found it.  smile.gif

I usually use the Fast Reply myself and code the smilies I want. If I can't remember the code for one I click the 'Enable Smilies" below the fast reply window. That pops up the full smilies list.

Not to give anything away but we are on the verge of upgrading the board software one of these days. When we do so we will probably have fewer 'clickable' smilies that will show on the regular reply page so it should load quicker. The full list will always be available if you want more choices.

Anyone notice this one? Was tempted to use it on one of those threads about the date/time sequence. smile.gif

Is there a tracking feature that lets someone know how often each smilie is used? I mean, why have one that nobody seems to know about? Might as well 86 those, eh? I mean, they aren't serving any higher purpose, right? Who needs 'em? They're cute, but... deadhorse.gif wink.gif

(Frances is gonna hate that one.)

These are all listed in the "Full List" window, not the normal 'Reply/Create' window, so they have no effect on the speed at which it loads. They do use space on the servers, but if we get that tight on space, we've got more important things to worry about! eek2.gif

I, therefore, see no need to remove any of the smilies available at TS. 'Smatter of fact, I think we have a much wider and unique set than most other forums, it's part of what keeps us 'special', IMHO. So, until we force you to use X, don't try to force the rest of us to dump smilies just because you don't use them! smile.gif harhar.gif rolleyes.gif biggrin.gif

Of course, I was merely beating that horse so I could use the new smilie. Judging from the sarcasm and the multiple smilies, I'm assuming you knew that. But, one never knows...

In fact, there are a lot of features that are privy to the admins only Gregg. We can track a lot of things.
