No Scroll Bar in Sound/Sound Effects

On a 24" Intel iMac, 10.4.9

I have no Scroll Bar in Sound/Sound Effects. I can only select/change sounds by using the up & down arrow keys.

FWIW, my scroll bars work fine everywhere else.

I have cleaned caches, ran all cron scripts, Repaired Permissions, ran DiskWarrior & TTP, Safe Booted, Zapped, shut down, and validated fonts, all to no avail.

But when I created a new User, the scroll bar returned. clap.gif

Ah, says I, must be some preference or application corruption or conflict.

So I then deleted com.apple.soundpref.plist and restarted, hoping that was the corrupt culprit. Arrgh, no joy. wallbash.gif

'Tis hardly a problem in the grand scheme of things, but it does vex me. Might some clever chap or chapette have a suggestion or two? Even guesses most welcome. Thinking.gif

Sorry, don't know which .plist is probably the culprit. But, if you are luck, try changing that setting as the very first ( user ) action in the morning and note the time. Then, search for any file 'modified' "today" ( command-f, in the Finder ). There'll be many, most will be due to the startup, but somewhere in there should be the culprit, check the times rather than the names. Good luck! smile.gif

Thanks for the tip XABD, though I am not sure I understand what exactly I should do. My machine is never off as I have it do several tasks at night, e.g., run cron scripts, make backups etc. So what is it that I should be looking for?

Open your Preferences Folder and view by Date Modified?

No problems there Sir Kelly. It's just that I don't see what this will accomplish.

And to complicate the matter a tad, I have an identical (well, as best I can make it) system on a PPC machine and all is normal there.

What I'm assuming in post #2 is that the plist will be written to when you change something/anything in the "Sound/Sound Effects" Pref panel. And thus, the "Modified" date/time will reflect that change. You stated that you weren't sure which file to move in your first post, we are attempting to provide a way to find the correct file without even knowing its name.

You can then search for any "Modified" "Today" items using the standard command-F function in the Finder ( change the default search type to "Last Modified" and the 'Any Date' to "Today" ). You may be surprised at how many files have been changed 'today' and the further into 'today' you get, the more there will be, that's why I suggested doing it as soon as possible in the 'day'.

Kelly's suggestion is even easier but you'll need to be in List View, of course.

BTW, not sure what version of OS X you're using, but since 10.4.3, there is no need to leave the machine on 24/7 to get the CRON jobs done. The OS is now smart enough to recognize that they need to be run whenever it is turned on. However, there could be other reasons to run all the time. Like you, mine is doing other things.

A bit of progress has been made.

Apparently the issue is with TinkerTool 3.7.

It seems that it is only when I enable TT (General) "Place scroll arrows together at both ends", that no arrows are displayed in System Preferences/Sound/Sound Effects.

But if I select "Place scroll arrows at both ends", then the scroll arrows in Sound Effects appear normally.

I have repeated this test numerous times, always with the same result.

I have written to the TinkerTool developer (Dr. Marcel Bresink) and asked for his thoughts. When I hear from him, I'll post his comments.

Dr. Bresink had this to offer (edited):

I could not reproduce this problem with any Mac OS X 10.4.9 Intel system. However, the exact results may depend on your personal language preferences and the ppi resolution of your screen.

Re: Apple's System Preferences application. I would assume you have a special combination of settings in your personal user defaults that cause System Preferences to behave this way.

You should also verify that you are not running some software that is "patching" Mac OS X to alter its normal user interface.

The only approximation I have to a user interface patch relates to a few Haxies. So I disabled all of those to verify that Haxies were or were not involved. Even with all Haxies disabled, the scroll bar condition continues as first described.

Seems 'tis a condition I will grow to love, well, at least learn to live with. doh.gif
