Airport Express card not recognized in dual 2 GHz PPC G5
« on: June 11, 2007, 02:11:41 AM »
In a previous thread, someone mentioned I could use an Airport Express card in my dual 2 GHz PPC G5 running under OS 10.4.9. Another recommendation was that I buy a refurbished card ($29 from Apple), which I did. However, when I installed the card and connected it (yes, I pushed on the card and the antenna plug with all of my 248 lb. behind it so they were firmly seated), the system did not recognize the card. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling 3 times still no joy!

One thing I did notice was that the card slipped into its slot quite easily. I thought it took considerable force to insert or pull the card.

Anyone have any ideas? My first thought is to take the card to my friendly Portland Mac store and have them see if the card is faulty. Second thought was to take the G% in to make sure the Airport circuit was working. Or perhaps Airport Express does not work with my G5. What do folks think? At $29, its not worth sending the card back to Apple.

Is this by any chance an Airport EXTREME, not Express?

If so, this may be your problem:

I looked at the page for the refurbished model and that paragraph is not on the page. You may have a bone to pick with Apple.  yes.gif

Mama:  When you find out, please post the result.  I know of another G5 PPC with much the same problem, an as you said, theowner didn't figure the $29 was worth fussin' up with.

Tom, do you have a dual processor or a dual core 2.0GHz G5??? For whatever reason, I assumed that you had the dual processor when I posted in the original thread. It won't work in the dual core - and I actually knew that and would have said as much if I'd been more on the ball. If it is a dual processor 2.0, it actually SHOULD work - those were all discontinued BEFORE Oct. 2005 according to everymac.com (all the intro and discontinuation dates for each model are there and quite handy in identifying them)

Dual Core 2.0GHz G5
Dual Processor 2.0GHz G5 - PCI
Dual Processor 2.0GHz G5 - PCI-X

Hi gang,

I have a dual[/bcpu (processor)] G5 built in late 2003. So, what kind of Airport card should I buy? My G5 does have an Airport card slot.

By the wy, no harm no foul, kelly. I problably will dump the G5 later this year.

Well, that's weird, because according to Apple's own notes on this card, it should work. So...maybe there is something wrong with the G5? Or the card might be defective. In either case, a call to Apple or a trip to the Apple store is probably in order.
