Acrobat Reader Problem after OS Upgrade
« on: June 27, 2007, 04:24:59 PM »
Hi guys,

I just installed OS 10.3 and then updated it to OS 10.3.9.

At first I thought everything was working OK, but there seems to be a problem with Adobe Acrobat 5, which does not even seem to exist anymore on my HD. All of my PDF files are now opened with Preview, and I cannot even find the Acrobat Acrobat Reader program.

I understand that the newer versions are called "Adobe Reader." I downloaded Adobe Reader 6, but when I tried to install it received a "ViseData" error. I don't think I should download Adobe Reader 7.0 or 8.0; I believe that they won't run on my system. I don't think there is a general problem downloading updates, since I just did so successfully with a slew of things, including Stuffit Expander, and repaired the permissions afterward. Any help here would be appreciated.

Well...sorry to waste anyone's time who was reading this. I found a workaround:

I had saved Acrobat Reader 5.0 onto both the partitions of my external Lacie HD. I just duplicated it, dragged it to my startup disk's desktop, and launched it with no problems. Then, when I clicked the Adobe icon in the menu bar this launced Safari and opened in the download site. It turned out that I was wrong; Adobe Reader 7.0.9 was the correct download, and installation proceeded without a hitch. I was able to open my PDF files with it without any problems.

I do wonder what happened to Acrobat Reader 5.0 when I upgraded. 5.0 does run in OS X; I checked before I clicked the update button. It's a mystery, but at least I got the &^%$ thing working.

Cheers,
Francine
