Can't run Quicktime within FireFox 2 a QickTime movie appears embe
« on: September 18, 2007, 12:09:58 AM »
I have a 17" MacBook Pro (Core Duo) and use FireFox 2 as my browser running under OS 10.4.10. Whenever a QuickTime movie appears embedded in a web page, I get the QT icon with a question mark inside it. Therefore, when clicking on the icon, nothing happens. By the way, I use QT 7.1.5. I searched everywhere for a QT plug-in that would activate an a QT movie within FireFox but could not find one.

Does anyone have an idea as to where I can find and download such a plug-in? I tried all the usual suspects, including Google, but to no avail.

Thanks,
MamaMoose

Tom, I would download Quicktime from here. http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/
It will reinstall the quicktime plug-in into ./library/internet plugins/QuickTime Plugin.plugin

After that I would do a GET-INFO on the plug-in QuickTime Plugin.plugin and that should bring up this info on this photo.

Sandbox,

I followed your instructions and downloaded QT 7.2 and installed it. However, when I checked Get Info in the Library, there I could not find Mozilla (default) (1.7.13). It's probably because I did not know to look for it. I did search for "mozilla" but got 30 answers and I could not find a stand-alone Mozilla. Could you please tell me where it redsides.

Thanks much,

MamaMoosde

Hey Mama,
OK, try this…. With all applications closed
In finder goto the menubar, click >GO>Home>Library>Preferences>and trash this file.

com.apple.quicktime.plugin.preferences.plist
close all the windows

then… goto the extreme left side of the menubar click >apple
then click Log out of Tom MamaMoose. wink.gif

Log back in
Try the page or file you need to get quicktime to open.
-------------------------------
-------------------------------
part 2

In the above post I wanted you to look for
QuickTime Plugin.plugin
that's the plugin you need.
But if your preferences aren't set correctly it may not work as it was intended.
---------------------------
---------------------------
part 3
if removing the file above doesn't give you the results you need…….
Close all applications
Goto menubar click >GO>Computer
Click on the drive>Moose drive… you should be in ROOT level
Look for and click on >Library>internet plug-ins…trash.. DON"T EMPTY>quicktime plugin.plugin
If you have a backup of this drive then don't worry about trashing the file for now.
And fi you still have the NEW Firefox installer it will place a fresh plugin back in the library.

Now start your browser and see if your Quicktime works.
Sometime a conflict is created between the Root plugin and Users plugin.

Let me know how she goes. hi.gif

Mama-Install Quicktime 7.2 and it should take care of everything for you.  I just had to do it for the same reasons, and here is where QT installed the plugin

He did, he said, and apparently it didn't work Jen, the install may not have changed his preferences.

Mam-Don't worry about the Mozilla part.  That's SB's browser preference, your browser may be different.  My "Get Info" does not show an application for opening QT.  It just works.

there is something about 10.4.10 that does NOT like any QT version prior to 7.2.  That is why I suggested just running the installer and letting it do its thing.  I lost all screen savers after I upgraded to 10.4.10 and did not do the QT upgrade.  I also could not view QT movies, the link you had about the artist "doing trash" would not show until I did the 7.2 upgrade.  It just wanted to be onery.  And I posted a couple of days ago about 7.2 interfering with an online game I really enjoy.  It wasn't 7.2 because I hadn't done it on the MBP, but I had done the 10.4.10 upgrade.

And I forgot to mention-Solitaire til Dawn acted up also.  The Ace of Spades lost its "face".  Again with 10.4.10 upgrade but without the 7.2 upgrade.  Once QT 7.2 was installed, all started behaving.

Jen Maybe finding and using a Page that calls Quicktime up would be helpful. Everyone could use the same link to express their experience and differences. wink.gif

Edit: forgot to add.
as you go back in time using earlier quicktime issues you need to consider security.

I can't get Quicktime movies to play in Firefox either - latest versions of all, .plist files trashed, plugins trashed, restarts, reinstalls...all I get is the audio - no video. And the Quicktime icon flashes and then disappears and then after a bit of a delay, the audio starts. I've disabled any 3rd party extensions that might have caused trouble. I've searched at the Apple forums where this has also come up as an issue and tried all the solutions suggested there, but no joy. It would appear that the solutions help some people but not all, including me. I give up.

Works fine in Safari - no delays either.

Never mind...

I'm not very good at giving up. After finding QT DID work when I logged in as a different user, which I'd forgotten to try, I decided what the heck, and simply removed EVERYTHING Firefox or Mozilla related on my HD and then reinstalled Firefox. Since it's not my primary browser, I figured there wasn't much I could break (and I could also update the bookmarks to match Safari's into the bargain)

Bingo.

Quicktime now works. smile.gif

I have no idea what was messed up, but something was, and it was something in my user account which has now been removed. I have no add-ons or extensions now either - not that I had any that I thought should interfere, but you never know.

The hard part was finding something that wasn't R rated! blush-anim-cl.gif Maybe that's why we visit the theaters so little...

At any rate, I couldn't find a trailer that would not play in FF (2.0.0.1) using QuickTime PlugIn (7.1.3). Maybe I should upgrade so it will break?! smile.gif

Paddy, normally when you remove com.apple.quicktime.plugin.preferences.plist the user issues are resolved.
It does help to log-out of the user and then log back in. wink.gif

SB - I removed all preferences related to Quicktime several times, and finally every other bit of QT that I could find before reinstalling it. I logged in and out as the user as well - still no dice. I did all that BEFORE I deleted FF. The only thing that finally solved it was completely removing FF and reinstalling it. So...I dunno - it seems to be a FF/user related issue, not a QT/user related issue.

Paddy is there an uninstaller, or did you do a search and destroy?  dry.gif

There is no uninstaller, so I removed all things Firefox and Mozilla/Firefox. Seemed to do the job. smile.gif
