Laptop With a Mission Widens Its Audience

In November, you’ll be able to buy a new laptop that’s spillproof, rainproof, dustproof and drop-proof. It’s fanless, it’s silent and it weighs 3.2 pounds. One battery charge will power six hours of heavy activity, or 24 hours of reading. The laptop has a built-in video camera, microphone, memory-card slot, graphics tablet, game-pad controllers and a screen that rotates into a tablet configuration.

A laptop for third-world children has a camera, communications ability and a high-resolution screen. Buy two: keep one and the other goes to a child overseas.

And this laptop will cost $200.

I'm going to do this!

I have signed up for their email notification. I hope I can designate the country mine goes to, but if not I'll do it anyway. I have friends who work in Burundi, Rwanda, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, and other countries where the needs are great.

"It is more blessed to give . . ."

Anyone else care to join me?

Joe

I'm not a complete idiot -- a few parts are missing!

I'd like to do it. I don't need one of these so I think I'll just donate $200. I love this project.

Just one thing: in David Pogue's video, he says there's a rechargeable battery. I thought it had a pump or a peddle to charge it.

Dan it has a handle to wind-up and a plug-in with a option for a 12 inch solar panel.
I want one to play with for a while, but it will most likely end up at the local school for study or use. wink.gif

The XO will eventually be available to the general public, hopefully with a % being donated to the cause going forward. The project is a 501 3C nonprofit so there will be a lot of friction from the Profit industry in days to come. wink.gif

If I do it, they won't call me every Tuesday at dinner time, will they?
Ya gotta applaud those bunnies for sacrificing their hearing just so some guy in Cupertino can have better TV reception.
